Serial sniper suspected in convenience store killings in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Bullets that killed three victims this week outside Kanawha County convenience stores were fired from the same caliber and class of weapon, police said Friday night, but they stopped short of saying they were fired from the same gun.
"All three balls had the same characteristics," Kanawha County Sheriff Dave Tucker said after getting ballistics results from a State Police crime lab. "But we can't say for sure it's the same gun."
Police warned residents not to visit convenience stores alone and stepped up patrols Friday, saying a single shooter could be responsible for the deaths of the three people in and around West Virginia's capital.

Translation: the sniper is using a high velocity rifle which does not leave bullets in a condition which permits ballistic testing.

Think he is using a 243 or a 30.06?
To: Travis McGee
I think you're right but the first thing that crossed my mind was that maybe some nut was out to prove that the original sniper murders could have been carried out with a more "primitive" firearm than one of the terrible "assault" rifles.

The WVGazette link in #7 identifies it as a "small caliber weapon". So, we're probably talking a .22.

Well, I can't think of a worse state in which to do something like this. Virtually everyone is armed.
I wouldn't be surprised if the perp ends up being taken out by an ordinary citizen.

"Maybe an '06 with a sabot." Why complicate?

"Maybe an '06 with a sabot."
Why complicate?
Because a projectile has no rifling marks on it if it is protected by a sabot. It would be nearly impossible to link to a particular weapon.
Randall Burgess, 23, of Mink Shoals, was shot twice in the chest and killed outside a Kroger in the Kanawha City neighborhood of Charleston on March 20 authorities are not ruling out a possible connection.
Gary Carrier Jr., 34, of South Charleston, was shot in the head and killed Sunday night while using a pay telephone outside a Go-Mart on Charleston's west side.
Police identified the victims of Thursday's shootings as Jeanie Patton, 31, of Campbells Creek, and Okey Meadows, 26, of Cedar Grove. Patton was shot in the back of the head at about 10:20 p.m. Thursday while pumping gas at a Speedway store in Campbells Creek less than 10 miles east of Charleston. Meadows was shot in the neck about an hour later and 10 miles further east as he paid for milk while standing outside a Go-Mart in Cedar Grove on U.S. 60. At night, customers must pay for gas and other items through a sliding drawer in the wall. Morris said police believe a rifle was used in each shooting because the shot that killed Meadows was fired from 60 to 70 yards away, while Patton was shot from about 30 to 40 yards away.
