INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Police Department has a new high-powered weapon in its arsenal after taking possession of more than 200 M-16 A-1 assault rifles this week.

The rifles will be selectively deployed throughout the force, RTV6's Jack Rinehart reported.

Police say the weapon is more powerful, more accurate and gives an officer a greater chance for survival on the streets.

"It would give the patrol officer an opportunity to respond with a level of force equal to any civilian counterpart," IPD firearms instructor Lon Harness (pictured, below) said.

In the past year, Indianapolis police officers have seized more than 200 illegal, but similarly-sized weapons from the street, Rinehart reported.

IPD officers have also come under attack at least six times from suspects armed with assault-style weapons in the past year. Almost two years ago, Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Baker was killed while the suspects held two police agencies at bay for hours with an assault rifle.

"It gives the guys an opportunity to do something that they might not otherwise be able to do with their pistol," Officer James Gray said.

Each shift and policing district will have the rifles available around the clock. Officers on the beat will use them to defend themselves and the public in situations where suspects are actively shooting.

"What did we learn at Columbine? The police show up, they do a perimeter, and they wait for SWAT to come up. Now SWAT has excellent response time, but when you have people actively being killed on the inside, we have to move," IPD Chief Jerry Barker said.

Not every officer will get a rifle. Barker said the department will go through a careful selection process looking for officers who combine good judgment with proficiency with a firearm, Rinehart reported.

The rifles should be on the street by the end of the year.

Don't go see S.W.A.T... waste of my perfectly good movie going money. I was not thrilled, tho they did make a good point about people who eat tofu hotdogs and such.

By the way, it's my general opinion that the only thing the Soviets ever got right was their engineering of their AK-47's, AK-74's and SKS. Why police forces aren't adding 47's to their arsenal I'll never know.

One opinion is as good as another I guess...but me and McGee have been around this forum a heckuva lot longer than you my friend. Why haven't you created an "ABOUT" page? The movie is a little campy but so was the tv series....and bearing that in mind, it was pure fun. IMHO.

"Why police forces aren't adding 47's to their arsenal I'll never know."

I know why. 7.62X39 is not a NATO round, is not available in large enough quantities that can be verified to be uniform in velocity and chamber pressures to validate issuing them en masse to any law enforment agency. Remember that like it or not, legal or not, the cops and the military often train together...and the feds and the locals often do so as well and none of those agencies uses this round.

ALSO the damn thing is responsible for killing HUGE numbers of American soldiers, marines, and SPECOPS operators the world over! A lotta cops are former military and it would just turn their stomachs to be issued the weapon of the enemy. I mean that no doubt it's a finely engineered weapon and in an emergency were one handy I'd happily grab it and just ROCK and believe me I can shoot, field strip and clean it...I just don't LIKE it! At least that's my feeling. What say YOU, McGee?

I like some aspect of the AKs, but like you, I'm creeped out by the specter of KGB guards shooting political prisoners with them as they ran through snowy forests. It's the tool of mass-murderers.

I'm off line for a week, when I get back, the books will be ready to mail out.

You got a good point ExSoldier... I need to think these things through before I open my yapper. As far as a reliability issue though, I do like them. I'll get working on my info page here right away... You've got to understand tho... I am from Canada, and every day is a fight to unindoctrinate myself from the Liberal Government propoganda machine, so half the stuff I spout out is probably half truth or misconception. I have got to get out of here.

I'm in kind of a quandary over this issue.
I know several ex-cops who are also ex-military and think just like we do, and, if fact, a couple of them are going to join our shooting group next shoot.
I've listened to their stories of being outgunned in encounters with the bad guys, and I can see their need to be better armed.
On the other hand, these guys are a different breed from the ones who are protecting us now. That's the reason they're EX-cops.
I don't know how this change was achieved in our police departments, but I know our liberal judges and liberal politics have driven a lot of the good cops out.

As far as the AKs are concerned, J., you and Travis gave all my reasons for not wanting them.

Tigermouth, things may be bad in Canada, but we're hurrying as fast as we can to catch up with you.

More like, now that they have a hammer, everything will look like a nail.

"We had everything covered, and if we had a problem, we had a bunch of New Mexico cowboys to help us out with the problem.
Damn, things have changed."

Yep. It used to be that cops were an extension of the people and the people would help in a heartbeat. Now, cops are above the law and no longer an extension but a power over the people.

There's always things I laugh at when I read these cop posts.

One is the line about the "old time cops" who were such grand guys "blah,blah,blah".. when the truth is there have always been good cops and bad cops. I could tell you stories about old timers that would make your hair stand on end.

Another is about SWAT cops being cowards. I've been on our swat team since november of 1990. When I got on we had Vietnam Veterans still on the team. Got guys who were in the Gulf War. 99% of our team is former military guys, one a Ranger. Guys who have been shot at and shot people. Part time SWAT guys who work the road day in and day out. Answering hairy calls alone. Cowards? Don't think so.

Another thing that makes me laugh is people saying they can't understand the young cops today. I can-LOOK WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM. A hedonistic, feminized, socialized, dumbed down, ME society. Which just happens to be this country. It's gonna be a real treat in 20 years.

Another laugher is about the cops taking over the world. Most cops just want to have a quiet shift and go home after 8 hours... (I'm just saying this to throw the trail off my nefarious plot to overthrow the free world...MINE MINE MINE)

I probably won't be going to see the SWAT movie... unless I need a really good laugh.

Oh, not venting at you personally, just in general... hope the book is a big seller.

Oh, and I'm advocating a new pistol and shotgun range for the dept. Want everybody to shoot at low to the ground, fast moving pit bull targets.

Got me another one today, big game hunting.

Pit bulls 0, Cap'n Crunch 1.

Only had to expend 1 department issue Remington 00 buck too. Now I'll be in the paper for being a dog murderer... probably get sued too.

the cops are no longer trained to shoot accurately with handguns

You got that right. Please be aware that the host of this site requests that folks save the mpg and relink it due to bandwidth issues...
