GOVERNOR DAVIS ANNOUNCES THE POWER OUTAGES ON THE EAST COAST POSE NO THREAT TO THE CALIFORNIA POWER GRID 08/14/2003

SACRAMENTO

Governor Gray Davis made the following statement today regarding the power outages on the East Coast:

"My office has been briefed by the CAL ISO, and we have been assured the California electrical grid is not at risk. I have ordered the CHP, the Office of Homeland Security, and the National Guard to take all necessary actions to ensure California's electrical grid continues to function effectively. According to the ISO, we face no such dangers in California. Because we have added 6,000 MW of new power in the past three years, we are not vulnerable if one major power plant goes out of service. Other than airline delays because of the closure of airports in several cities, we do not expect Californians to be affected by this power outage."

Yep, Gray Davis is the expert at turning off the lights. But instead of waiting for an accident, Gray goes out and negotiates bad deals.

what's the guard going to do to ensure the grid functions effectively?

Maybe the plan is to have them run on a big wheel like gerbils to generate power. (Actually, they'll proably sit arount and play cards with do-nothing state government employees.)

These wacky liberals are like Saddam Hussein. They don't really believe that they'll be taken out of power. They'll bury their heads in the sand until they hear the knock on the door from people who are there to physically take them away.

And from a fictional Grayout Davis statement:

"My office has been briefed by the CAL AFL-CIO.

"We have been assured the California electrical grid is not at risk, as long as we place all union electricians on standby at time-and-half as soon as they pass 40 hours and double time past 60.

" have ordered the CHP, the Office of Homeland Security, and the National Guard to take all necessary actions to ensure California's electrical grid continues to function effectively. The CHP, Office of Homeland Security and the National Guard will station one member each at the base of each transmission tower in the state. The CHP and Office of Homeland Security members will be paid on the same scale as the electricians. The members of the National Guard will get their usual 75% pay cut when called to duty from their non-union private sector jobs.

"According to the AFL-CIO, we face no danger of a power outage in California because we have added 6,000 union electricians to the state payroll and increased their pay and benefits by over 125% in the last two years.

"Other than airline delays because of the closure of airports in several cities--and remember New York, Cleveland, Detroit and Hartford are NOT in California, we do not expect Californians to be affected by this power outage.

"Thank you, and vote against the recall. A vote against the recall is a vote for me, Al Franken, er, Gray Davis."

Davis is desperate to look good. I'll bet he was elated when he heard the news. After all, he put us through a lot of power outages, but if he can say "everyone does it," maybe he thinks we'll forgive him.

Electrical fire forces evacuation at United Nations

By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS (August 13, 8:11 p.m. PDT) - An electrical fire in a basement of U.N. headquarters forced the evacuation of hundreds of staff members Wednesday and injured one firefighter, U.N. and fire officials said.

Twelve New York fire trucks and 60 firefighters responded to the one-alarm fire after the initial call at 2:35 p.m., Fire Department spokesman Sean Johnson said. The blaze was declared under control within 45 minutes.

One firefighter was taken to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries, he said.

The fire started in an electrical room in the second basement of the U.N. Secretariat building, U.N. officials said.

U.N. staff members were evacuated from the three basement floors, which include conference rooms, the post office, a popular cafe and U.N. maintenance shops and mail facilities.

U.N. security chief Michael McCann said there was no reason to evacuate any other part of the U.N. building.

In June 2002, the United Nations and the New York Fire Department conducted their first joint exercise, tackling a mock explosion and fire on the 26th floor to test communications and response times.

The 39-story U.N. headquarters building overlooking Manhattan's East River was reported to be a terrorist target following the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

And here is an article relevant to a Davis & power grid thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/964398/posts

Here is why it happened.

The Sierra Club and friends. (ABC, the New York Times, Al Gore, etc.)

They are also responsible for the brownouts in California last year. Why? Because their overweening influence in our governments from cities to states to the federal level, has brought power development to a virtual standstill. (Gray Davis hasn't added a watt to the grid during his entire time as governor. See A Public Comedy of Errors )

This doesn’t require an engineering degree, folks.

If all your power needs are supplied by a centralized grid which is not allowed to expand to meet increasing need, you are heading for a blackout. A five gallon fuel tank will not allow an eighteen wheeler to haul cargo from Portland to Pendleton. It’s as simple as that. If you add a million new citizens to your state, which is exactly what happened in California, they come with power needs. Lights, heating, cooling, television sets and toasters. If you don’t increase your power grid’s capacity, which is exactly what happened in California, your power grid will collapse under the added demand.

For decades, the greenies and their Democrat friends have strangled new power development. Because of the power plant construction regulations they have pushed through, the various government agencies involved have brought such attempts to, if not a standstill, a snail's pace. But, that’s not all they have accomplished. Loving centralization as socialists do, they have made it possible for one terrorist in the right spot with a packsack full of dynamite to bring down a power grid that runs from Ottawa to Ohio and east to the Atlantic, blacking out the lives of more than ¼ of North America’s population in a single, easy stroke.

As I write this, the East Coast blackout is going on. What would happen if some terrorists had a few airliners right now? Or if some terrorists on a skyscraper roof had a bag of chemicals or biological agents? You couldn’t even warn the residents of New York City.

Is there a solution to this power disaster, and pending danger? Of course.

Never vote for a Democrat again.
