BOMBAY, India - U.S. and Indian scientists said Wednesday they have discovered a new carnivorous dinosaur species in India after finding bones in the western part of the country.

The new dinosaur species was named Rajasaurus narmadensis, or "Regal reptile from the Narmada," after the Narmada River region where the bones were found.

The dinosaurs were between 25-30 feet long, had a horn above their skulls, were relatively heavy and walked on two legs, scientists said. They preyed on long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs on the Indian subcontinent during the Cretaceous Period at the end of the dinosaur age, 65 million years ago.

"It's fabulous to be able to see this dinosaur which lived as the age of dinosaurs came to a close," said Paul Sereno, a paleontologist at the University of Chicago. "It was a significant predator that was related to species on continental Africa, Madagascar and South America."

Working with Indian scientists, Sereno and paleontologist Jeff Wilson of the University of Michigan reconstructed the dinosaur skull in a project funded partly by the National Geographic (news - web sites) Society.

A model of the assembled skull was presented Wednesday by the American scientists to their counterparts from Punjab University in northern India and the Geological Survey of India during a Bombay news conference.

Scientists said they hope the discovery will help explain the extinction of the dinosaurs and the shifting of the continents — how India separated from Africa, Madagascar, Australia and Antarctica and collided with Asia.

The dinosaur bones were discovered during the past 18 years by Indian scientists Suresh Srivastava of the Geological Survey of India and Ashok Sahni, a paleontologist at Punjab University.

When the bones were examined, "we realized we had a partial skeleton of an undiscovered species," Sereno said.

The scientists said they believe the Rajasaurus roamed the Southern Hemisphere land masses of present-day Madagascar, Africa and South America.

"People don't realize dinosaurs are the only large-bodied animal that lived, evolved and died at a time when all continents were united," Sereno said.

The cause of the dinosaurs' extinction is still debated by scientists. The Rajasaurus discovery may provide crucial clues, Sereno said.

India has seen quite a few paleontological discoveries recently.

In 1997, villagers discovered about 300 fossilized dinosaur eggs in Pisdura, 440 miles northeast of Bombay, that Indian scientists said were laid by four-legged, long-necked vegetarian creatures.

Indian scientists said the dinosaur embryos in the eggs may have suffocated during volcanic eruptions.

What I find interesting is how those posters who previously used to discuss science from the YEC side seem to have tossed in the towel. Thus, while DittoJed2 was going through the 'no transitional fossils'...'genome shows design'...'radiometric dating doesn't work' litany, there were a couple who would egg her on, but hardly anyone jumped in on her side. However, when it reached its inevitable 'evos are Nazis' conclusion, and she gave up, we had the chorus of 'Christians are being silenced' complaints, from posters who had been silent all along. Gosh, if you were disturbed at a 10 vs. 1 dispute, and were sympathetic to the 1, wouldn't you jump in? Well, maybe or maybe not, depending on how brave or scared you were.

I don't think you can make a good scientific argument for YEC, but I think it is a good exercise to force the science crowd to defend their conclusions. Working scientists take this stuff as given and don't have time to defend the foundations of their assumptions. It's up to teachers (and some of us amateurs) interested in the history of science to take the time necessary to defend science.

It's also interesting to see the ID folks apply skepticism to the conclusions of science. Sauce for the goose.

Well, having failed to convince anyone that their "science" has any merit, they then resorted to thuggery, by attempting to be so disruptive that we'd all give up and go away. Having failed in that -- quite substantially -- they are now grumbling that some dark "anti-Christian" conspiracy is afoot to silence them. One or two of them talk as if they may actually believe such nonsense. As we've seen so often in these threads, some people can make themselves believe anything.

A good resource for Anglo-Saxon stuff is available on the website of Georgetown University... are you familiar with it? It has sounds and texts, including some interesting old spells for getting rid of warts and Wulfstan's Sermo Lupi ad Anglos (The Sermon of the Wolf to the English).

Old English is certainly very different from modern and as you say it had changed a lot by Chaucer's time: blame those Norman barbarians for some of that, I guess!

You just said that you don't want to discuss your belief and claim to believe what it says. These two don't go together. Jesus didn't say go and keep your belief personal. You are not being very straight forward with where you are coming from.

Many believers come to the Lord slowly, sometimes with great effort, and often after periods of great doubt and tribulation. We need to encourage these people to continue in their walk, not discourage them. The Lord will work out the fine points in His own time.

"The expression 'to seal up the vision' (v.24) should be considered. This expression, 'the vision', occurs eleven times in Daniel 8:1 to 10:1, and in all these cases it refers to the vision described in the eighth chapter of Daniel. The reader is advised to read again the entire passage. In pictorial, symbolic form the prophet was shown the unfolding of all future centuries till the second advent of Christ. The famous empires, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome, which long oppressed the people of God, are described; but particular emphasis is given to the persecution of the church during the Christian era and also to the supremacy of the couterfeit, apostate religion over most of that period. Christ's mediatorial ministry in heaven is alluded to, but its eclipse from men's mind through a counterfeit system is fortold.
