BOMBAY, India - U.S. and Indian scientists said Wednesday they have discovered a new carnivorous dinosaur species in India after finding bones in the western part of the country.
|
The new dinosaur species was named Rajasaurus narmadensis, or "Regal reptile from the Narmada," after the Narmada River region where the bones were found.
The dinosaurs were between 25-30 feet long, had a horn above their skulls, were relatively heavy and walked on two legs, scientists said. They preyed on long-necked herbivorous dinosaurs on the Indian subcontinent during the Cretaceous Period at the end of the dinosaur age, 65 million years ago.
"It's fabulous to be able to see this dinosaur which lived as the age of dinosaurs came to a close," said Paul Sereno, a paleontologist at the University of Chicago. "It was a significant predator that was related to species on continental Africa, Madagascar and South America."
Working with Indian scientists, Sereno and paleontologist Jeff Wilson of the University of Michigan reconstructed the dinosaur skull in a project funded partly by the National Geographic (news - web sites) Society.
A model of the assembled skull was presented Wednesday by the American scientists to their counterparts from Punjab University in northern India and the Geological Survey of India during a Bombay news conference.
Scientists said they hope the discovery will help explain the extinction of the dinosaurs and the shifting of the continents how India separated from Africa, Madagascar, Australia and Antarctica and collided with Asia.
The dinosaur bones were discovered during the past 18 years by Indian scientists Suresh Srivastava of the Geological Survey of India and Ashok Sahni, a paleontologist at Punjab University.
When the bones were examined, "we realized we had a partial skeleton of an undiscovered species," Sereno said.
The scientists said they believe the Rajasaurus roamed the Southern Hemisphere land masses of present-day Madagascar, Africa and South America.
"People don't realize dinosaurs are the only large-bodied animal that lived, evolved and died at a time when all continents were united," Sereno said.
The cause of the dinosaurs' extinction is still debated by scientists. The Rajasaurus discovery may provide crucial clues, Sereno said.
India has seen quite a few paleontological discoveries recently.
In 1997, villagers discovered about 300 fossilized dinosaur eggs in Pisdura, 440 miles northeast of Bombay, that Indian scientists said were laid by four-legged, long-necked vegetarian creatures.
Indian scientists said the dinosaur embryos in the eggs may have suffocated during volcanic eruptions.
First of all, when someone's conduct has crossed all the tidy little lines of the agreement: (1) disruptive conduct; (2) polite warning given, which specifies the conduct in question; (3) persistence in the disruptive conduct; he can be quite properly called a troll. He is entitled to none of the protections of the agreement. We treat the troll as we ourselves would expect to be treated. It's the Golden Rule being applied to someone that everyone realizes is breaking all standards of civilized behavior in here.
What's happeining here is that someone has been labeled a troll from another thread, and here we are in a new thread, and the same person is here. We don't need to go through the same drill each time a new thread is begun.
If only one or two on the creationist side are able to see anything wrong with the troll's disruptive conduct, it's because they have not yet awakened to the serpent in their own garden.
The theroy of evolution is evolving. Ironic, isn't it?
Oh please. Without hypothesis and conjecture there is no point to research. It's just stamp collecting.
Without words like 'imagine', 'possibly', 'perhaps', and 'maybe', science would be reduced to the level of blowhards who demand certainty and insist that they have it.
We will not use obscene or belittling words to describe another complying poster or whatever that poster believes;
What do you suppose comparing him to medved is intended to do? It certainly has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
There is a time and a place for everything though. It would get tiring every time the roundness of the earth was mentioned, to have to wade through 100 posts of a spammer from the flat earth society. It seems that one can now not mention anything about science whatsoever, without having to wade through ALS coming in trying to disrupt the conversation, and sending in f dot in for reinforcement with the forestated gibberish, in case ALS isn't successful in disrupting the flow of conversation.
I respect the fact that people are creationists. However, I see no point in spam bombing every story that might suggest the earth is over 6,000 years. You don't believe it's true, we get it. This story wasn't called... we found dinosaurs in India, so your religious views are a fraud.
This was a story about a new species of dinosaurs being discovered in a new place. You believe that life used to be like Alley Oop... fine... say it once. Let's keep the evo and creationist spamming to threads that are specifically devoted to that purpose. I suspect that your purpose though ALS, is to disrupt any conversation in regards science, and I am quite frankly bored with your efforts.
End of rant.
Gallup Poll. 1997
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/science/DailyNews/evolutionviews990816.html
Among scientists, only 5 percent hold the literal Bible view, 40 percent believe in theistic evolution and a majority, 55 percent, believe in evolution without help from God.
So 95% believe in evolution; most claiming it is entiirely naturalistic, a smaller number think it happened with some guidance from God, and only 5% adhering to a strictly biblical view.
Since there is no proof that Christians believed in a flat earth at any point in time, and since it has become evident that libelous flat earth tag can't be found towards Christians before 1830, saying that Christians believed the earth was a flat disk is just idiotic and shows extreme prejudice on your part. The Bible says the earth is round. Christians believe the Bible.
As I understand it, and I'm not a Hebrew scholar, but there are several here on FR, the passage in Isaiah that translates to 'the circle of the earth', uses a Hebrew word that means circle or disk. It does not mean sphere. Therefore, to claim the Bible says there is a spherical earth is fallacious.
Some Christians, particularly in the early middle ages, did believe in a flat earth. For example, there is the famous sixth century map of Cosmas Indicopleutes which shows a flat earth with four corners.
Your accusations of prejudice on my part are ad hominem and unjustified.
What in the sam-hill do you think panspermia is supposed to be saying
That life arrived on earth from elsewhere. it just avoids the question of the origin of life. It does not answer it.
As for the direct debate b/w the two camps... I see no purpose. I have yet to see one post where anyone has indicated that they have been convinced by an arguement from either side. How do you describe color to the blind?
Well then good, maybe you can understand that calling people names and chattering from the sidelines is equally galling. Look up at the thread. Here are first posts excluding pings by people.

Discussions regarding a purely scientific topic do not require any input from those who have no belief (or understanding) of the scientific method. They should feel free to discuss creationism all they want on threads dedicated to that topic. 51 posted on 08/14/2003 3:19 PM CDT by StolarStorm To: StolarStorm Just because evolution is an extinct dinosaur doesn't make dinosaurs the exclusive domain of extinct evoloonies. 56 posted on 08/14/2003 5:32 PM CDT by ALS (http://designeduniverse.com Featuring original works by FR's finest . contact me to add yours!) |
Notice who belittles first.
BTW, I did not sign on to the agreement for precisely the reason you see here. You "evolutionists" are carrying on as previously and blaming others for the disruptions you start.
But it was directly related to his posts about man and dinosaurs living together - just like medved used to argue.
Now if some dinosaur species has survived to the modern day, that statement is clearly true but utterly meaningless. Therefore, he is either arguing for men being around for the last 100 million years or that the age of the earth is some insupportable number like 6000 years. The first idea is ludicrous and the second worse but both are truely medvedian.
It would be like every time there is a "pray for President Bush" thread, a bunch of people jumping on to that thread saying that God doesn't exist, your prayers are worthless. Science is God, quit deceiving yourselves. Then not saying it just once, but spamming the thread repeatedly.
So what? He is not medved. It has nothing to do with his argument. The comment was not made to him, but about him. That is belittling him. Then the comment was generated, essentially, that creationists have no business commenting on a "science" thread. Well, like ALS, to that statement, I suggest you go elsewhere than a conservative site to discuss something non-conservative when you desire to squelch input from others. This is a wide world.
It has everything to do with his argument. If you suddenly started posting about a British East India Company conspiracy to control the world, I would almost certainly mention medved in my reply, even if for no other reason than to remind everyone that we've "been here, done that" before today.
Does this mean that you consider the theory of evolution to be non-conservative, or the discovery of a new species to be non-conservative?
I consider science to be science and not politics. And I consider the opinion that creationists have no right to comment on any thread on a conservative site to be a political opinion that is not conservative.
