ping.

Tom's certainly having an impact. It's good to see his message of fiscal responsibility and small government getting out. I hope we see a lot of resonance with Californians of all stripes.

Their history: http://www.ca-ra.org/history.htm is fascinating. Check out their perspective after FDR's victory.

I've been tracking the number of web sites on google that mention "Tom McClintock". His name is growing at a much faster rate over the weekend than during last week:

[Google Advanced, using second line, exact phrase]

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

Latest Check...

Tuesday moning: 13,800 [9.5% increase since Friday afternoon. More gains over the weekend by far than during the week when Rush and Hannity both first mentioned him.]

Friday afternoon: 12,900 [2.4% increase after Rush and Hannity mentioned him.]

12,600 08/07/2003 2:36 AM PDT

Also, I checked on Bill Simon Friday afternoon and this morning.

Tuesday Morning: 30,000 [7.1% increace over Friday afternoon.]

Bill Simon FRIDAY Afternoon: 28,000

Conclusion: McClintock is picking up a little steam. In fact, his supporters have more momentum with them than the Simon supporters. That in itself is amazing, considering that Simon was the leading challenger, only 5% behind Davis, just a few months back.

But his name recognition is still very low. The percentage of growth needs to keep increasing for him to stand any chance with such a short timeline. I am not so certain, however, that Arnold has California locked yet. That 'real bullet' threat was, I think, a threat of dirty laundry. How dirty, we don't know yet. FReegards....

I got the location for the headline from CRA's application form PDF. They're apparently active in Burbank, as well as chapters spread all around California. It's quite an organization, and I admire what I've seen so far. I didn't want to confuse readers with our California state assembly's Republicans, some of whom may or may not be members.

I have tried using the link (in #4), and have also typed it directly in the main address bar, neithe has worked. I was especially interested in their response to FDR's victory. I will try other means.

Anyone recall or know what ever happend to "U.R.O.C."? They used to be even more conservative than CRA. I wonder if they just went out of business in California?

The motto of the CRA should be

"Sending Democrats to the Electoral College, the Senate, the House, the Governor's Mansion and the Statehouse shows what effective leaders we are"

I found this at http://www.nf-ra.org/intro.htm:
Is The CRA Truly Conservative Today?

The degree to which history has labeled the CRA as "liberal" or "moderate" has varied over the years. In 1963 a group of Goldwater Republicans split from the CRA and formed the United Republicans of California (UROC), because they felt the CRA was "too liberal." Many former members of the CRA have spoken of its liberal past, however the California Republican League (CRL) was formed by those who found the CRA to be "too conservative."

The reality today? During the last decade the CRA has become the most successful politically of the three Republican organizations in the state, and is conspicuously and proudly conservative in its choice of candidates, its resolutions, and its stated goals and beliefs. As of this writting, CRA Members completely dominate the California Republican Party Board of Directors and the Republican Caucus leadership of both houses of the state legislature.
The site is the home page of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA).

From the http://www.ca-ra.org/history.htm link:
56 Years of Dedication
A History of The California Republican Assembly
By Fred Davis
From a Second Publishing March, 1990

Franklin Delano Roosevelt's landslide victory in 1932 left the Republican Party in a state of ruin and frustration. While the Grand Old Party's grand old men reeled under the devastating defeat, some younger men in California decided to pick up the pieces and start putting the party back together again.

On Feb. 11, 1934, a small band of young Republicans got together in San Jose. Many of them were there to attend a regional Junior Chamber of Commerce convention. Among these were Edward S. Shattuck of Los Angeles and William F. Reichel of Oakland, both of whom would later serve as presidents of the California Republican Assembly. Paul Mason of San Francisco was elected temporary chairman of the group.

These "Young Turks" were fed up with Republican politics-as- usual, and were determined to re-structure the party in California. They wanted younger men to take control from the Old Guard.
Interesting stuff!

Bump! And just for the record, this:

CRA Endorses Sen. Tom McClintock for Governor in Recall Election

The California Republican Assembly (CRA) endorsed State Senator Tom McClintock as its choice to replace Gray Davis in California’s historic recall election October 7th.
Over 200 delegates, representing nearly 100 chapters of the CRA from throughout the state, met in Burbank in convention over the weekend to select and endorse their candidate for Governor.

Sen. McClintock spoke to the delegates at their Saturday luncheon, and Bill Simon addressed the Saturday night dinner crowd. On Sunday, representatives of each candidate placed their nominee's name before the convention. All the major Republican candidates were invited, including Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After the nominations were closed, the delegates voted. McClintock received more than the two-thirds vote necessary in a voice vote.

McClintock has long been a CRA favorite and has been endorsed by the conservative volunteer organization in every one of his campaigns for office.

“Tom McClintock embodies all that CRA stands for,” noted CRA President Mike Spence. “He is a rock solid conservative who will stand up to the special interests and clean up the mess Gray Davis has created.”

Declaring that he is ready for the fight, McClintock reiterated his campaign theme of reducing the illegal car tax hike implemented by Gray Davis, voiding the fraudulent energy contracts signed by Davis and convening a special session of the legislature to reform the worker’s compensation system that is driving businesses from the state.

“If the legislature fails to act, I will take the measure to the people with a ballot initiative,” proclaimed McClintock.

In his acceptance speech, McClintock thanked CRA for its efforts to hold elected officials and the Republican Party to the conservative principles upon which the nation was founded.

“This is the heart and soul of the Republican Party,” McClintock told delegates at the endorsing convention. “This is the heart and soul of the conservative movement.”

McClintock answered questions about the potential funding disparity between his campaign and the other candidates in the race by noting that CRA’s grassroots activists are a major factor in winning races. They are, he noted, “the one force in democracy that cannot be measured and cannot be bought.”

Three candidates received nominations for the CRA endorsement: McClintock, Bill Simon, CRA’s endorsed candidate last year who narrowly lost to Gray Davis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Simon, who had entered the race officially on the day prior to the CRA vote spoke to delegates the evening before, but did not mount a significant challenge to McClintock who had been campaigning for the endorsement.

McClintock received more than the two-thirds vote necessary for the endorsement by voice vote over Simon. Schwarzenegger received no votes.

CRA is planning to mail a special edition of the California Republican newspaper to voters prior to the October election. Individuals wishing to financially contribute to help pay for the mailing can make contributions online at www.ca-ra.org.

Contributions may also be mailed to:
