Schwarzenegger out front

The race is on for governor of the Golden State. New polls show that 64 percent of Californians are prepared to recall Gov. Gray Davis, setting up the vote for his replacement. Last week, former President Bill Clinton — who, of course, almost lost his job when he was impeached — offered Mr. Davis advice on how to keep his own job, and the governor is expecting the Clintons to campaign for him. We are not convinced the former first couple will squander any political capital to embrace this dead man walking, and it probably wouldn't matter even if they did. To put it mildly, Mr. Clinton has never had the Midas touch when it comes to helping other Democrats get elected. That, however, does not mean fellow Democrats aren't coming out shooting.

Hopefully Bill Simon will get the message and drop out of the race in the next few weeks. We'll need Tom McClintock to stay on til its clear Arnold has enough momentum to win for two reasons: 1) to keep Arnold honest and 2) to be a backup candidate in the unlikely event the front runner does do a fast fade. I think when all is said and done, this race is Arnold's to lose.

Agreed. While I do not agree with Arnold 100%, I will support Arnold. Bringing back businesses (and if he is serious, that would mean cutting taxes and regulations), even if it was to support "social programs", is certainly better then no businesses in the state with tons of expensive social programs. I support Tom McClintock, but, since he doesn't appear to have much of a chance, I'd have to go with Arnold. Unless Arnold starts fading really fast which, I am hopeful that he won't. Bill Simon...I like the guy, but he had his chance...and lost.

Until the day Calfornia is a "conservative" state, a simple move to the right (even with Arnold) is better then nothing IMO. Puriest can weep.

Simmy, I have to agree with you, although it pains me to support an entertainer who is frankly, for the most part, a RINO. He has the same attributes as those on the left we ridicule for involving themselves in politics, such as Barbra Streisand, Sean Penn etc. ad nauseum. For example, does Arnold have any education above high school? We know he has no experience or expertise. He does have an "R" by his name, but I have often accused dems of supporting other dems simply because of their party affiliation. Certainly I would not support Arnold if he were a democrat, although there are some democrats I would support and have supported (Sam Nunn comes to mind). But you make a good point, and one that ultimately resolves the issue, at least for now... THIS IS CALIFORNIA.

Aunold's poll numbers peaked the day he entered the race. They will continue to decline until 10/7. He has no platform and/or solutions for the mess in Sacrameto. McClintock is the only candidate with a plan to balance the budget and do so without raising taxes and/or fees. Check out the McClintock's website before you make a series mistake! VOTE 4 MCCLINTOCK or pay the consequences! http://www.tommcclintock.com

Nonsense.

The first poll, CNN/TIME, had him at 25%.

The Gallup poll, a day later, had him at 48%.

A poll taken yesterday for four California television stations had him at 61%.

If anything, he's RISING in the polls.

OTOH, the CNN/TIME poll had McClintock at 9%, while the poll taken yesterday had him at 6%, with Ueberroth ahead of him.

Lucky for us you live in TX. Aunold has yet to answer one question on what he would do if elected. Your boy has no platform and/or solutions for the mess in Sacramento. And as soon as he starts to answer substantive questions, the Terminator will self-destruct! Better let us CA adults do the heavy lifting and you sit back and enjoy the popcorn.

How does McClintock plan to reduce the deficit, has he said?

This is your only hope, but it's a mighty thin one.

Arnold has the team of the last Republican governor to actually win TWO terms in California advising him.

He knows how to handle the media, and will likely control all the forums at which he will appear.

McClintock barely has two nickels to rub together, and if he goes negative on Arnold, he's dead. OTOH, he can't afford to buy much media. Not an enviable position.

NBC poll shown on Katie Braun's show this morning and discussed by Tim Russert, shows McClintock at 4 percent, tied with Arianna!

I see Arnold Schwarzenegger as the left coast's version of Rudy Giuliani. They have practically the same political views and what conservative wouldn't vote for Rudy if he ran against Hillary

Us folks that don't live in California certainly will enjoy the popcorn. Popcorn tastes a lot better than the fruits and nuts that you people have to put up with.

I just don't see how you could possibly think McClintock has a chance given the make up of California. For crying out loud, he can't even win the FreeRepublic poll, how will he win in California?

I've done the math based on voter registration and turn-out in California and I just can't see ANY scenario that leads to McClintock winning.

But hey, I still have an open mind. So if you see a scenario that leads to McClintock winning, what is it?

Just curious..... where all you CA adults been to let the state get in such a mess? Kinda seems like you maybe a little late to the party..... But I hope you the best in getting it turned around. It will take time unless you all are superhuman adults.... Good Luck.

He received a BA in business and economics from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1979. He also has been awarded a number of honorary degrees.

Ah, yes.....it's all coming back to me now. That so-called Midas touch was re-christened THE CLINTON THUD, for the devastating LOSER effects of the Toon showing up to 'help' you get elected.

That is why we are having a recall, to correct the mistake. The Dimwit Davis lied about the budget deficit and got into office on false pretenses. Tom McClintock has already laid out a plan to balance the budget and do so within two years without raising taxes and/or fees. Thank you for your well wishes. With the grace of God and continued hard work, we will turn this mess around and do so quickly!

We are expecting as reported yesterday as high as a 90% voter turnout on 10/7 which will be historical. Almost 20% of CA voters are registered Independents. The Independents are the deciding factor in CA elections. Aunold has not answered one substantive question since he entered the race. He has no platform and/or solutions to the mess in Saccramento. While McClintock has laid out solutions to the budget, the triple car tax, rescinding the 42 billion dollar electrical contracts signed by the Dimwit Davis, the worker's comp, the illegal alien license issue and on and on...McClintock is the most intelligent, credible and experienced person to run the state while Aunold is an empty suit. Mac will mop up the canvas with Aunold in a debate! Sit back and watch! The more people learn about the Terminator the more they are going to like McClintock! Only 57 days 'til we DUMP DAVIS! VOTE 4 MCCLINTOCK or pay the consequences...http;//www.tommcclintock.com

Although I supported Bill Simon's candidacy during last year's primaries, and voted for him in the general election, he has not worn well with me. Last year, by the time the general election rolled around, I was beyond disgusted with the inept, pathetic campaign he ran. This year, he just comes off as a smarmy, smug, opportunist jasckass.
