Schwarzenegger opposed (ILLEGAL) immigrant services

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger voted for a 1994 ballot measure to deny social services to illegal immigrants, his campaign said Sunday — offering the first glimpse of the actor's stand on a major policy issue.

The Republican has promoted himself as the candidate in California's gubernatorial recall who can best appeal to the state's politically and ethnically diverse electorate.

But Democrats were quick to jump on the disclosure as a chink in the action hero's armor.

The GOP-backed Proposition 187 to deny health care and public education to illegal immigrants was passed by a wide margin, although it was eventually ruled unconstitutional. It remains a contentious issue and a litmus test for some voters, particularly Hispanics, to gauge whether a candidate is immigrant-friendly.

Schwarzenegger campaign manager George Gorton said the Austrian-born actor's vote for the measure would not prevent him from reaching out to all voters.

"He has a lot of empathy for people who have come here for a better way of living, whether they have gotten here legally or illegally," Gorton said. "But he definitely feels that people should get here legally."

Gorton said Hispanics were among the strongest supporters of Proposition 49, a ballot measure Schwarzenegger successfully campaigned for last year aimed at dedicating as much as $550 million annually to before- and after-school programs.

Speaking on ABC's "This Week," Art Torres, chairman of the California Democratic Party, slammed Schwarzenegger for his decision to appoint former Gov. Pete Wilson, the architect of Proposition 187, as chairman of his new campaign.

"There's a famous phrase in our community, and that is, judge a person by the friends that he keeps," Torres said. "And unfortunately, his new chairman, Governor Wilson, supported 187 furiously against immigrants and Latinos."

The issue was one of the first Schwarzenegger's campaign has publicly addressed, discussing the vote in response to a reporter's inquiry.

Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, who is trying to survive the recall, and Schwarzenegger's Republican rivals have criticized him for speaking mostly in generalities since announcing his candidacy Wednesday.

Davis opposed Proposition 187.

Apparently, the fact that this concerns ILLEGAL immigrants didn't seem important to whomever wrote the headline.

Good for Arnold. I hope this is still his position. Why have immigration laws if they can be violated without consequence? Either enforce the law or change it.

For anyone who might be interested, the liberal Aunold is in NY and is about to speak. You think he would want to be in CA speaking if this were a serious campaign instead of a free publicity stunt for his movie. Now for anyone who is seriously interested in what a conservative candidate would do if elected, you can go to http://www.krla870.com and listen to a re-broadcast of Tom McClintock's interview on the Mark Larson program and what McClintock's proposals are. He was on at 7:45 this morning.

Arnie's obviously not beholden to the liberals with this issue and it takes a lot of guts due to the inevitable charges from the Demonrats of throwing out the term 'racist', etc. but there is no excuse for the Demonrats attempting to sell this country away in regards to people who enter this country illegally and take services that are paid for by our hardworking citizens. I wish Republicans would point out these kind of issues more in regards to the political pimps the Demonrats are.

Of course, even in NY, Arnold will reach more Californians today via free media than McClintock or any of the other canidates combined.

Schwarzenegger was scheduled to speak at this event before he threw his hat into the ring. It has nothing to do with any movie, but with the projects he has been connected with concerning kids.

But Democrats were quick to jump on the disclosure as a chink in the action hero's armor.

But, This republican was quick to jump on his liberal policies on liberal social issues. Such as.

Abortion

Gay rights

Gun Control

Just to name a few!

Why can't we conservatives seem to look for someone who can not only balance a budget but, also has some moral social POLICIES?

Thanks to this kind of people picking we ended up with the a Supreme Court that done more damage to this country then all the liberals combined.

Picking winners is not a great republican asset. They win short term but, lose long term. Arnold is an example.

Lets not tell me he's only running for governor and that will nor influence the moral deacay of this nation. If he can collect money in New York he can influence policy also.

Would AP have written the headline or would Sandra Marquez have written it? Or someone else, say the local news source?

Im shocked too! LOL. If he was a serious candidate he would have put out several hundred pages of documents outlining his views and specific plans for the state. He would have also given four or five one hour policy speeches (SARCASM INTENDED IN CASE THERE IS ANY DOUBT)after all he has been a candidate for five days ... He did get his lengthy tax returns out in record time, even though not required by law.

Debates are needed! And the campaign is in CA not NY. So let me know when Aunold will be available to debate! We only have 57 days so if Aunold is a serious candidate for governor of CA and not some actor just getting free publicity then I suggest he rush back to CA ASAP. Serious Californians are interested in the problems in CA not NY and what Aunold would do if elected. Now for those who are interested in what a serious candidate who is a conservative would do if elected I suggest everyone go to http://www.tommcclintock.com and read the material available. Unfortunately, Aunold has no such website and we have no clue what his policies are other than socialism. McClintock has a plan to balance the budget and do so without raising taxes and/or fees. DUMP DAVIS! VOTE 4 MCCLINTOCK!

The GOP-backed Proposition 187...

Didn't this win by 2:1? You don't get that kind of return in California by Republicans alone.
