Of course, this bulge in the lake could explode at any time, or not for 200 years, and like I said it has NOTHING to do with a caldera blast or anything; it would be thousands of times smaller.

Geologist - volcanoligist, I see.

It's not just the lake and temp. The whole area has been uplifting for some time now - geogically speaking.

Were you the one that told Harry Trueman, "hey, it's cool - nothing more than a burp!" :)

Not likely to happen in our life times.

But when it does - again - it will be huge. I guess that means it will also be serious.

The entire yellowstone park is a what I believe is called a Caldera volcano. It has been blowing itself to smithereens spectacularly every 13k years of so, if memory serves and is due to go off again any time.... and when it does, it will be a blast so large and so devastating, and effects so wide spread, nothing like it will have been seen in modern times... closest thing might have been Krackatoa (sp), but event hat was NOTHING compared to this thing when it goes... last time it blew, it literally blew nearly the entire land area of the park away when it erupted.

Least that's what I am pulling from memory, I am sure someone else here can correct me if I am recalling wrong. Won't be a pretty sight in western us and canada when it goes.

Thermal activity closes part of Yellowstone

US Geological Service ^ | July 22, 2003 | National Park Service

Closure of the western part of the Back Basin Trail within the Norris Geyser Basin

Press Release http://www.nps.gov/yell/press/0362.htm

On July 22, Yellowstone National Park issued a press release to inform the public that it would close the western part of the Back Basin Trail within the Norris Geyser Basin. This follows increased thermal output within this area including areas immediately adjacent to the trail, beginning on July 11. Norris is the hottest and most seismically active geyser basin in Yellowstone. Recent activity in the Norris Geyser Basin has included formation of new mud pots, an eruption of Porkchop Geyser (dormant since 1989), the draining of several geysers, creating steam vents and significantly increased measured ground temperatures (up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit). Additional observations include vegetation dying due to thermal activity and the changing of several geysers' eruption intervals. Vixen Geyser has become more frequent and Echinus Geyser has become more regular.

Much of this activity may be attributed to the "annual disturbance", which, as implied by its name, is an annual event at Norris with increased boiling, increased turbidity of thermal pools, and apparent increased injection of waters from deeper parts of the hydrothermal system. The disturbance occurs within the summer season. A study of changes during the 1995 annual disturbance was published by Fournier et al. (2002). This year, changes at Norris are more pronounced than in previous years.

I have no arguement that the media screw - missinforme and spin whatever.

I have sailed over the hole of Krakatau and have taken soundings - I have observed what was left - 3 islands what was once a whole - and a deep hole -

I am not a geologist - I am a technician - an engineer - I have been following the Yellowstone bit for a year or so - if this puppy pops St Helens could look like a cake walk. And we won't know til it happens.

Uh - 1000 of times smaller - that would be significant. On order of magnitude and the Ricter scale once we get past 10 to the 2nd it's all over.

We live on a rock heated by the sun and falling thru the cosmos in a spiral trajectory tugged by gravity ... figure out gravity and you have the Nobel prize.

OMG !!! Look at the image from the U.W.-Madison of past
volcanic debris zone. Can somebody please post the image
from UWM.

The last eruption of yellowstone was considered minor..70,000 years ago.....

70,000 years ago..was the last time when Mars came by close to Earth as I recall, and after that 140,000 years ago @
and yellowstone blew again..minor.., but what is minor ?

ummmm...actually you are right.

Given the prevailing winds - generally from west to east - the destruction to the west would only be a 100 miles or so. My guess, nothing more.

To the east, different story. Ash, measured in feet, a long ways from it. Like Nebraska.

Use Mt St Helens as an example. Complete blowdown and total destruction in what - 30 - 40 - 50 miles in the direction of the blast? I'd have to go looking again, but seems that I remember measurements of pyroclastic flows on the order of 100 miles or more. Again, I'd have to back that up with some research fact, for now, just some hazy memories.

While Mt St Helens was indeed an impressive event, it would not make a decent pimple on the ass of the order of magnitude of the two biggest events from YellowStone.

You say 100 miles. I'll have my toes closer to 1,000 - in any direction. With lots of cold beer. And hot dogs.

just so I know if I have to start packing , we live in Eastern Washington.....will we be hit, or will the prevailing winds send the ash to the east?

we live approx. 300 miles from Mt. St Helans and we got a few inches of ash the last time....still have some somewhere in a bottle....

I heard one of the guests on the Coast to Coast AM radio show say that if Yellowstone blows it could trigger a chain reaction causing all the volcanos in the United States to erupt

It could, but then again, it might could not....

the eruption of Toba in Sumatra about 74,000 years ago may have caused global cooling of from three to five degrees Celsius, and perhaps as much as 10 degC during growing seasons...

Toba is a supervolcano with a 110km caldera. When it last exploded 74,000 years ago, the worldwide population of homo sapiens took a massive hit. It's estimated to have declined to just 7,000 to 9,000 individuals worldwide. Since one of these things goes off on average two times every 100,000 years, these things are 1,000 times as frequent as an asteroid hit.

but are the moose in danger?

I don't think so. I once spent a summer at Yellowstone teaching the park moose to mix concrete and sign complicated insurance forms. Based on this experience, I truely believe that the moose of Yellowstone are not in danger due to their superior intelligence.

Time to 'drill' and lance this boil?

Then there was the nurse who used to get everything bass ackwards. Instead of operating room 4 at 2 o'clock, she'd show up at operating room 2 at 4 o'clock, and so forth. Anyway, one day she was given orders to prick a man's boil. The man was last seen running down the hall, half-ass gown a-flapping, with the nurse in pursuit, carrying a pan of steaming hot water.

Something like 2,000 cubic kilometers of ejecta.

I am not a scientist, just a old soldier. I know this information is not good for many, but it's the truth...
Something is occurring deep underground at yellowstone
and it's coming up, slowly...

Check out the Real-time reading/listening post of the U.S.
national Seismograph Network, and what we see here is movement underground and yes small earthquakes are occurring too, so far under 3.0.....but the regions with
the hot spots,news vents,fires,etc....etc...are from
Norris, Madison, the Lake, Mt.Sheridan.....

If you don't believe, look at these readings from today ,and real-time....

something underground is moving toward yellowstone, magma ?
check out the pattern here.....look at the big picture

Every time I've been through Yellowstone, I am awed by the place. The lake kind of scares me, frankly. Can't say why, exactly, but it does. Just don't feel like I'm on solid ground anywhere near there.

Course, I have a similiar feeling in DC these days, too.

I would think that the results would be similar to attempts to punch a hole in the side of an overinflated balloon in order to try to "relieve" some of the pressure.
