Shockey calls Parcells 'homo' in magazine interview

ESPN.com news services

The season hasn't even started, yet Jeremy Shockey is getting a head start … off the field.

The New York Giants tight end ripped into new Cowboys coach Bill Parcells, calling him a "homo" among other comments in an upcoming story for New York magazine, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

"Let's see how much Parcells wins this year," Shockey is quoted as saying about the former Giants coach in the magazine issue that will be released Monday. "I'll make him pay when we play them. The homo."

Shockey, who at 22 is entering his second NFL season, reportedly went on to call Parcells a quitter.

"He says he quits, then he wants to come back and coach," Shockey said in the interview. "Do something. Stay in commentary or stay in football or get the hell out of everybody's life."

After the Giants' preseason game against the Patriots on Thursday night, Shockey denied making those strong quotes in the magazine article.

"I really don't want to comment on something that's just not true," Shockey told the Daily News. "I'm 100-percent sure I didn't say that … I think he [the writer] got it mixed up from something my friend may have called him [Parcells]."

But the reporter for the New York magazine story, Chris Smith, told the newspaper Thursday that he has the interview on tape.

Smith told the Daily News that Shockey "went on at great length … how he's [Parcells] a publicity hound, how Shockey's gonna make him pay when they play. He ended this monologue by calling him 'the homo.' It's 100-percent accurate."

Smith has been a writer for New York magazine for 15 years.

Shockey also seem bothered by comments Parcells made about him when the coach was a TV commentator. "All my buddies are like, 'Why's he dogging you?'" Shockey told the magazine. According to Shockey, they'd say, "After you catch a pass on him this year, you oughtta throw it right at his fat head!"

Giants spokesman Pat Hanlon told the Daily News, "Jeremy is adamant about the fact that he did not say what he's being portrayed as saying. It sounds to me like there was a miscommunication about what was said in the conversation."

But before Shockey's denial, Hanlon told the newspaper the team was concerned. "Jeremy is learning that there is no such thing as a throwaway line. Obviously those sentiments do not represent those of our organization."

Parcells won two Super Bowls with the Giants and nearly led the Jets back to the gridiron promised land, making him a revered sports figure in New York.

As for Shockey, he is known for his demonstrative behavior on the field. A rookie who made the Pro Bowl, Shockey was fined $10,000 for throwing a cup of ice into the stands and making an obscene gesture during last season's first-round playoff loss at San Francisco.

He was also "fired" from a WFAN-New York radio show after not calling in for his weekly appearance for the second time in two months. Mike Francesa and Chris Russo responded by calling him "unprofessional".

Shockey has also apologized for comments he made about gays during an interview on Howard Stern's radio show in September 2002. During the interview, Stern asked Shockey if he thought there were any gay players in the NFL.

"I don't know,'' Shockey said on the show. "I don't like to think about that. I hope not.''

Shockey also was asked if he had any gay teammates when he played at the University of Miami.

"No. I mean, if I knew there was a gay guy on my college football team, I probably wouldn't, you know, stand for it. You know, I think, you know, they're going to be in the shower with us and stuff, so I don't think that's gonna work."

Shockey was named Rookie of the Year after setting Giants tight-end records with 74 catches for 894 yards, the second most in NFL history in each category for the position.

Actually, it would be nice if Shockey and Parcells could sit down some place quiet and work this out. While they are doing that, someone can drop a bomb on that place.

I think they should sit down in Dallas and talk about it. And then when Shockey leaves the room, they can do whatever they want while Parcells is still there.

A preseason game? I don't think so.

Ah, yes. Another 22-year-old who "knows everything" except how and when to shut his pie hole.

I hate to see good English food being confused with queer folk (i.e., poofs)!

Actually, I think he meant to say 'homey'.

Just what the NFL needs...a second year player who knows more than one of the most successful coaches of our era. Shockey is a punk.
