The story I heard (leaked by one of Arnold's people) was that Arnold had dinner Sunday night with Riordan and presured him to decide one way or the other. He could get no definite commitment from Riordan that he was going to run. With only a few days left to file that convinced him to go for it.

Well, I dunno. The old saying in all this is "don't believe everything you read in the newspaper." This leaked story could be more BS than anything. While I'd like to believe everybody is friends and coordinated on this, I know Arnold has incrediable drive and ambition.

I think a more logical explanation is that Rioden was too noncommital even after Arnold told him he wasn't running and he swept in.

Or worse, this was a brilliantly staged play of drumming up an Epic amount of populist interest in the campaign with no regards to friendly pledges.

Oh, no....Don't tell me the Dems started a rumor??? Add that to the Powell rumor.....Slow news week??

It's not over until Saturday. Let's see what the Dems do. They need California in the Presidential election and if they have a Republican governor, it might be a tad harder. Go California!! Vote Republican!!

A Republican is going to govern the state of California and President Bush will have a chance to win the state. And the RATS cannot win the White House without CA!

Among those caught off-guard by the announcement was his close friend and another potential candidate, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. One of Riordan's closest advisers said the mayor thought he had an understanding that Schwarzenegger would withdraw from the race, easing Riordan's way in.

Am I missing something here? How can Schwarzenegger have withdrawn from a race before he was even in the race?

This is only the beginning of the RAT rumors and lies that will be told about both Arnold and President Bush. Freepers need to stop falling for everything they read or they will go crazy. RATS lie and RAT media lie. People here should be smart enough to know that - most are but there are always those that continue to believe papers like the LA Times, Washington Post and NY Times. That needs to stop. Go, Arnold! Go, President Bush!!

I heard the same thing too.
Arnold it appears, will play the media and throw them out the window like a two dollar watch... when he is done with them.

the pubbies have this one bagged, I believe.

Bush and Rove are no-doub laughing their arses off. Me too. California, which was 'in play' for the dems in 2004, is now a lot closer to in the bag for a major republican revolution of social moderates and fiscal conservatives. pretty cool when you think about it. The worm is turning.

Barring unforeseen legal obstacles, this ought to be over in sixty days... over for the dems, over for the anti libertarian wing of the pubbie party and over for the people of california who simply JUST want to WAKE UP from this nightmare...

Needless to say the loss of California is like a stake in the heart of ultra leftists. good.

I wholeheartedly agree with what you said. I posted this for people to know the kind of person their next Gov is, but its a done deal, except for McClintock, who is still well known to Californians despite what the press prints.

What's more important nationally, is because of the Demos believe that CA is their backyard (which isn't really true since Davis was the 2nd Dem Gov in about 20 years) that they will obsess on this for the next few months.

Guess what that means? No more oxygen for Kerry, Gephart, The Breck Girl, and others to make up ground on the Dean/McGovern ticket!

Why are you so angry? Arnie has more chance of winning than Riordan, though Riordan might win anyway.

Call me a big believer in States Rights, but I don't like national commentators making predictions about things that don't affect them- and worse, are completely wrong.

Rioden had 0% chance anyhow, but he was a nation the media knew and regurgitated over and over. Unfortunately I think perception becomes reality in politics.

The Arnold phenomenon is fun, but how he is phrased as being CA's only hope is insultingly ignorant since my man McClintock got more votes last election than Simon did and had a chance before this media orgasm. I'm not against Arnold, but I am more than skeptical of Arnold's ability to cut spending to omni-powerful Employee Unions(this is a complex situation, more than any soundbyte about a Governator), and stories like this set off alarm bells about his character. Remember, we are conservative, character matters.

"a) Knock Yokoyama -- Governor of Osaka

b) Kenji Aoyama -- Governor of Tokyo"

These two came instantly to my mind as well.

Drudge must be angry also, since his credibility took another dive.

Notice how Matt's prominence has confused a Reuters writer:

Analysts say that although Schwarzenegger has never held public office, he has the charisma and personal funds to make a credible run. However, he is likely to face a rough campaign and Democratic operatives were already drudging up information about his past lifestyle.

AH...you're backing McClintock. I prefer him. Read a lot of his writing, appreciate the common sense he has in abundance and his fight against Grey for years.

In addition, he has better credentials. He still stands a chance of winning. With 30 candidates in the race, the thing has already become a fiasco, and the likely result is the LT Gov will wind up winning. That would be bad.

While I HOPE McClintock wins, Arnie's entry into the race will likely ensure that not even multiple absentee ballot votes by illegal aliens and felons will allow another Dem in office.

Yes, I agree completely. Arnold might not win himself after the very dirty state Demos have at him, but yesterday insured the end of Davis for all pracitical purposes, so it was a great day.

McClintock is head and shoulder above any politician on any side I've seen in years. His biggest obsticle is that the media purposefully ignores him. This Arnold explosion kind of ties into that. Makes me sick.

One thing Arnold knows is show business, and that will make this next 2 months entertaining.

If Arnold attracts more attention to the election than it would receive otherwise, that could work out well for a thoughtful candidate like McClintock, once people sober up over the next few weeks.

The future is unknowable.
