NEW YORK -- It was like a Wild Kingdom fight for survival in Manhattan's Bryant Park. A hawk attacked a Chihuahua dog Tuesday.
The hawk is in the park as part of a program to scare away pigeons and rodents. However, the dog was on a leash near some bushes when the hawk swooped down.
Thomas Cullen, the falconer who is in charge of the hawks, said the bird may have mistaken the dog for a rat.
A few people were able to separate the bird and dog. The dog suffered wounds and was being treated.
The Bryant Park Restoration Committee, which hired Cullen and his hawks, said it may suspend the program.

How's the hawk doing? Chihuahuas can be nasty little customers.

I would have paid money to see that
was attacked by one of those little pieces of crap one time(as a Kid)
hated them ever since. My big fat lab would eat it for a snack.

A few people were able to separate the bird and dog. The dog suffered woundsI'm sure it did. I'm a pre-apprentice falconer and have been to a number of hunts in Illinois and Georgia. Hawks are fierce and tend to strike on an animals spine.
Of course, the amount of damage the bird got from being seperated by people almost guarentees the bird will need to be put down.

I am sorry but anything smaller than a cat ain't a dog and deserves to die like a cat.....(Flame away)

I like little dogs. I had a pair of minipins before. WONDERful dogs that would have put up quite a fight with a bird. I'm also a big fan of raptors and am about 6 months away from taking my falconer's exam. Once I get that behind me, I need to find a master falconer I can apprentice to.

Minipins stand about 8" at the shoulder, but have the tough demeanor of a fullsized doberman. However, they are not related to dobies!

"The hawk is in the park as part of a program to scare away pigeons and rodents."Only a moron would do this in an urban area.

Hawks are killers. Last year I heard a huge ruckus in my backyard, a flock crows were screeching like crazy, and I caught just a fleeting glance of a big hawk flying away, with a crow in his talons. I can't hate hawks, I know they got babies to feed, but I don't like em. Not after I came home and saw one sitting on a tree stump in my back yard....eating one of my prettiest koi!

I was stationed in Adak, Ak for a year and we had bald eagles on the island. The female sailors were scared to go to the pizza place to bring home pizza's because if an eagle saw them walking with it they would swoop down and make the females drop it for a free meal.

I had to put a weldwire cover over a friend's koi pond for just the reason you've cited. Raptors and racoons.
