This study documents the following 10 important key points.

1. Semiautomatic assault weapons (like AK and AR-15 assault rifles and UZI and MAC assault pistols) are civilian versions of military assault weapons. There are virtually no significant differences between them.

2. Military assault weapons are "machine guns." That is, they are capable of fully automatic fire. A machine gun will continue to fire as long as the trigger is held down until the ammunition magazine is empty.

3. Civilian assault weapons are not machine guns. They are semiautomatic weapons. (Since 1986 federal law has banned the sale to civilians of new machine guns.) The trigger of a semiautomatic weapon must be pulled separately for each round fired. It is a mistake to call civilian assault weapons "automatic weapons" or "machine guns."

4. However, this is a distinction without a difference in terms of killing power. Civilian semiautomatic assault weapons incorporate all of the functional design features that make assault weapons so deadly. They are arguably more deadly than military versions, because most experts agree that semiautomatic fire is more accurate—and thus more lethal—than automatic fire.

5. The distinctive "look" of assault weapons is not cosmetic. It is the visual result of specific functional design decisions. Military assault weapons were designed and developed for a specific military purpose—laying down a high volume of fire over a wide killing zone, also known as "hosing down" an area.

6. Civilian assault weapons keep the specific functional design features that make this deadly spray-firing easy. These functional features also distinguish assault weapons from traditional sporting guns.

I was laughing about Travis McGee being on the VPC website, so I went to see the pic and then started perusing the site. Came across this talking points memo (the bold faced words are theirs, not mine) and decided that these goofs aren't going to just go away no matter how much we want them to just wake up and see the error of their ways or the evil that they do. We need to be aware of this, because they are formulating this stuff to use against us! We need to prepare appropriate answers so that we can explain them simply to a non-gun person (the target group) and to a non-freeper, which is to say somebody not so politically acute. They're not gonna stop and neither can we. We're in a war on multiple fronts. Some of it entails real blood and real casualties. Some of it involves what these guys do which is: "Shooting from the lip!" If we're not careful, both may prove fatal to us and our way of life.

Actually, the quoted statement is probably true by at least some measures (e.g. lethality per round fired). On the other hand, full-auto fire is often used not to get many rounds on target, but to keep many rounds airborne in an area to keep the enemy from going there.

On the other hand, if the goal is to kill a target with one bullet, a good hunter with a deer rifle can probably do as well as a soldier with an assault rifle.

I have an SKS assault rifle, but I use a sniper rifle for hunting (Win Model 70 in '06) because it is more accurate and more deadly.

During the LA riots, the first thing they did was to ban sales of guns and ammo within the LA area. Those people who only kept a box or two around were SOL if they had to repel invaders (as the Korean store owners did).

Going around confiscating guns is risky -- banning ammo from being manufactored and sold is much less risky. Eventually, ammo starts to deteriorate, and the totalitarians have a long timeline

Yup. The only purpose of assault rifles is to kill lots of people quickly. That's why the [only] the police should have them. At least I think that's the logic, though nobody's quite explained why the police are supposed to kill lots of people.

Of course, I handload, which means having 20k rounds is no problemo. I have st least 5k on hand at any time. I shoot "often". Putting together 50,000 isn't much more difficult. Those $1/round Gold Dots are $6.50/box of 50 handloaded to perfection.

Actually, this was done by either South Africa or Rodesia, they found an overall saving in ammunition and an increase in hits on target.
