Need help finding my Outlook Express address books and mail folders (vanity)

My computer, which had been running Windows 98 SE, recently developed a problem which left the hard disk unable to boot into Windows. I have created a startup disk which does at least allow me to get to a command line prompt.

I have done countless CD and DIR commands, but am unable to find my .WAB (address book) or .MBX (mailbox) files. Any help would be appreciated. Part of the problem, of course, is that the directory names are truncated.

Is there a DOS-based "file search" tool that I could use, that would let me find the files?

Maybe your OS needs updating.

Did you try to just going to the IE, Tools, Windows update and let MS determine everything you need and update your OS? One would hope that after you do that, you will also be able to install Word 2002.

Yes I did. The vendor is saying this is backwards compatable and my wife needs the word program for her home business.

As a general rule you are very funny. Having gone through this myself you are not being helpful.

Download the Knoppix iso image, burn it to CD, boot your computer from it into Debian Linux, grep for the desired files and copy them to a floppy or to your CD burner. A Knoppix CD is a very handy tool to have around when troubleshooting hardware and software problems.

Thank you soooo much. Yes, I follow the path, and (even though the names are truncated) I get to that directory.

I see a number of .DBX files, which I recognize as corresponding to my Outlook Express folders. However, I see no .WAB files, for my address book. Where might they be? They're not as important, but I would like to get to them if I can.

I now am on Windows XP. Is there a way I can back up the Outlook Express folders and address book more easily? Specifically, is there a way I can move these data to "My Documents" and tell Outlook Express this fact? Thanks.

Hi, I tried running xt32_240 at the command line, but am told that cannot be run in DOS mode.

What I have is a Windows 98 startup disk that I put into my laptop. Once I get to the command prompt, I can do directory searches. But what I want is a DOS equivalent to Windows Explorer.

Reading it over, it sounds like the Word CD itself may have what you need or it knows where to go on the internet to get it. Not to doubt you on the obvious, but did you just hit "continue" and see if Word setup itself will install that stuff, that's what it sounds like from the message you got, that it will install the stuff you need first, then continue with the installation of Word.
