New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton Friday praised the efforts of a fledgling liberal lawyers' group to counter the influence of the decades-old free market Federalist Society. During a luncheon address to the "American Constitution Society for Law and Policy," Clinton seized another opportunity to blast the "vast right-wing conspiracy," saying she only regretted implying it was a secretive effort.
"It has been clear for a number of years that there really is a vast right-wing conspiracy," said Clinton. "My only regret was using the word 'conspiracy,' because there is absolutely nothing secret about it.
"It is a network with an agenda that truly is intent upon turning the clock back on" the New Deal laws that "saved capitalism" -- laws favoring unions, mandating overtime pay as well as work health and safety standards, and "rein[ing] in uncontrolled economic power" of monopolies," she said.
Starting in the 1930s, Clinton suggested, "there has been a commitment to trying to go back to some golden age." But the American people are unaware of what's really going on, she said. The American Constitution Society (ACS) and its allies must "figure out how we can best convey to the American public what's really happening.
"If the American public really understood much of this (Bush) administration's agenda, they would reject it," said Clinton.
"It is far outside both the mainstream of political, economic and social thought. And it runs counter to the expectations that the majority of Americans have about what America will look like and where their role and place will be in that future America," she said.
Forum
That's where the ACS, the two-year-old project of Georgetown University law professor Peter J. Rubin, comes in - providing a forum for those wanting to speak out about President Bush's judicial nominees and the future of the judiciary, in Clinton's words.
The ACS is funded by a host of liberal charitable foundations, and its board of advisors is a who's who of left-of-center legal scholars.
The group's three-day conference in Washington, D.C., featured speakers like Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno (who's throwing a Saurday night dance party), Sen. Maria Cantwell,D-Wash., and NARAL Pro-Choice America's Kate Michelman.
Federalist Society President Eugene Meyer has praised the ACS's stated goals of putting more intellectual firepower behind liberal jurisprudence, telling the Associated Press that the group has the "potential to encourage more civility on the left."
But Clinton indicated that any concern over civility is not going to stop the ongoing debate over four of President Bush's judicial nominees anytime soon.
She defended the Senate Democrats' ongoing filibusters directed at judicial nominees Pricilla Owen, Miguel Estrada, Carolyn Kuhl and Bill Pryor but added that the Senate has confirmed 145 of Bush's judicial nominees.
Clinton called Estrada "learned and accomplished," but said he is just "following orders from the Federalist Society not to answer ... questions." She called Pryor, Alabama's attorney general nominated for a spot on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, "the most troubling of all."
Rewarding the Far Right
"What the administration has set out to do is not only to reward its far right by nominating people who are sure to provoke a reaction by the Democrats," Clinton charged, but to suggest that Democrats "aren't sympathetic to women or Hispanics or others."
Like Clinton's conservative counterparts meeting across town at the annual American Legislative Exchange Council meeting, Clinton portrayed such political struggles in epic terms.
"There truly is a profound struggle occurring over the future direction of our country. It is occurring on many different levels in many different venues," said Clinton. "One of the hardest fought of all of these struggles is over the future of the judiciary."

I don't know that this will play with anybody but the unions members that are already part of the democrat's base.
I think this will play with a lot of people. The rats have successfully characterized all reform as "repeal" of overtime laws and with couples working on average 1000 more hours per year, I think this has broad appeal with the Republicans on the wrong side of the issue.
I think this one also has some broad appeal. I'm not the only freeper who thought that Bush was wrong in trying to overturn the media ownership limits and you saw how strongly the House felt against it.
Just what we need another Liberal group of lawers </sarcasm off> Maybe that's a Republican campaign item if the witch gets into the race, especially given the liberal rulings recently like the pledge and the homos.
This could also be another campaign issue for the republicans that will work against the rats. On the otherhand, part of me really wants to see Frist nuke them.
I have read and heard from several sources that the "nuclear option", if used by Frist, will cause the complete shutdown of any bills passing through the Senate. And, that all cooperation and compromise will cease between parties...thus total gridlock.
Perhaps that is not a bad thing, but budgets and such have to be passed or the government will shutdown.
She used to like it that way.
LOL
I would LOVE to see who's on that "A" LIST!
I've read that too and think it's probably valid. That's the part of me that is content to wait awhile to nuke them.
BWAHAHAHAHA!!! The queen of the thousand and one "I can't recall" responses is lamenting someone not answering questions. Boo freakin' hoo, Hillary. Why don't you give us some answers yourself on, for starters, Chinese campaign contributions....?
She has realized she will never be president, and is now acting like the true bitch she is.
It came through loud and clear during her Bogus Health Plan. I can remember sitting on the couch and saying out loud "You just called me stupid" AND THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE IN THE ROOM!!!
