Soldier sleeps in fridge to escape Iraq heat Sat 2 August, 2003 03:31 BST

LONDON (Reuters) - A British soldier serving in Iraq tried to escape from the sweltering heat by sleeping in a walk-in fridge but ended up being treated for hypothermia.

The lance corporal, an army medic in his 20s, had sought shelter from the blazing summer sun but was found asleep in a dangerous condition by a colleague and was taken to hospital, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported on Saturday.

The soldier told officers he had become trapped while getting supplies but they didn't believe him, the paper said.

"The lad was a bit of a fool to think he could have a kip in a fridge and not suffer from pretty bad consequences," a fellow soldier told the Mirror.

"But it's so hot here that most people kind of understand what was behind his bizarre logic."

An army spokesman told the paper the soldier had recovered but was embarrassed.

The human brain just isn't meant to function--can't function--at high temperatures.

But I wonder if he closed himself up inside or left the door open or what?

I dunno. Amazingly enough, perhaps, he did after all survive the war...

How cold is a fridge? 40? And how hot outside? 115? Frankly, I would rather do the first than the second. My house went down to the mid 50's at night when I lived in NY, and I remember my mom when she lived on a KS farm told me the water would freeze in her room sometimes.

Sounds like he shut the door behind him.

Just how long was he in there for? Last summer I worked the concession stands at the beach. Single story brick buildings with no fans or air conditioning. On top of the heat from the sun, we had the heat from the grill and the fryers adding to our misery. I used to spend as long as an hour and a half in the walk in fridge, sitting on top of a ice cold beer keg.

Bring your sleeping bag next time, mate. Great idea, poorly executed.

A fridge is only about 40-43 degrees, right?

We can't sleep in that???

He probably didn't take a blanket with him.
As long as you are awake in a frig you are ok, as you tend to know when you are getting too cold.
If he fell asleep without a blanket then I can see where he could have gotten hypothermia.

I suppose the award itself is precluded if you survive.
