During a Wednesday morning (July 30th) press conference, President Bush was asked a question about jobs going overseas as a result of technological innovation. His response was:
"I fully understand what you're saying. In other words, as technology races through the economy, a lot of times worker skills don't keep up with technological change."
Many people have taken his response to mean that unemployment in the high-tech sector is the result of American workers who allowed their skills to become obsolete. This is an unacceptable explanation.

But in absense of such statements, it is simply asinine for Bush to imply that we just need more training for workers affected by changes in technology - when there is a far broader economic change going on here, and all the training in the world ain't gonna help these folks, let alone trainin for tech jobs that are going away as we speak.
Well, he obviously just needs more training /sarcasm. Seriously, I feel his pain, I was out of work for eight months last year and it sucked lemons.
Yeah whatever dirt, believe what you want to believe. You have been kicking and screaming all this thread that Bush's remarks were not misconstrued, even when presented with the evidence.
Rant on dirt, I am done trying to reason with people who want to live in their own little world.
BTW, it is your right as an American to live in your little world, that doesn't make it sane, though.
Where did you hear tha whopper? We were protectionist for 2 centuries in this country!!
"But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade." ~ Karl Marx, On the Question of Free Trade, January 9, 1848 http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/01/09ft.htm#marx
"Communists and socialists feel sure that setting up international free trade systems which impose regulations chuck full of intrigues, redistribution plans, arbitrary law, and interdependence schemes, will win out against the conservative interests of every free nation. What could be better than to use free trade to reverse the advantage of the relatively free, moral, prosperous, and strong nations of the Earth, so that the tyrannical, amoral, poor, and weak nations of the socialist bloc might get the upper hand? What could be a more cunning approach than to market the idea that those who oppose free trade are enemies of freedom?" http://www.newsmax.com/commentarchive.shtml?a=2000/6/27/105655
This is an understatement.
It is an explanation by someone who has one foot in reality and the other foot planted firmly on a bananna peel.
As long as wages continue to decline in tech fields, how do you suppose we get more people to get compsci degrees or training? How about those up-to-date skilled Americans who still get the boot because they demand a livable salary?
Dane, either present said evidence yourself, or do us all a favor and duct tape yourself to a rabid badger.
I have had several jobs in 15 years. My experince in some of the more advanced software has kept me employeed or helped get a job sooner. It is not a guarantee of employment; but not keeping up with the time puts your higher on the layoff list and lower on the re-hire list. -peace
Sitting around watching jobs leak out of this country is inhumane. Socialistic at worst. Hey I know, listen up all you lazy, unemployed IT workers: learn Spanish and follow the crops. Since the only thing you'll have left is your car (if you're lucky), it won't be so bad. Just think of the education your kids will get!!! Viva diversity!!!
Luckydevi, I think you are a classic troll...
Hmmm, take out $80K in student loans to make $20K a year, when you can get menial factor work that pays that.
Sounds like a great ROI to me.
The question was obviously phrased wrong to begin with. Everyone knows the jobs aren't going overseas because of technical innovation, but because of cheap labor. Programmers in India earn about 1/10th of the salary earned by a programmer in America.
It's just a different kind of sweatshop.
If we want capitalism to thrive in America, instead of more socialism, we need to have some level of protection for American jobs instead of happily sending them to a socialist or communist country.
