Reuters: Ugandan Dictator Amin Still Alive, Doctors Say

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Doctors said Idi Amin, blamed for the murders of tens of thousands of Ugandans during his bloody dictatorship in the 1970s, was still alive in a Saudi hospital Tuesday.

"He is still in intensive care and alive," a Saudi doctor at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah told Reuters. He refused to give details on whether Amin was in critical condition.

Amin came out of coma last week and was said to be then in serious condition. Earlier last week, the hospital said Amin might not survive.

Amin has lived in exile, mainly in Saudi Arabia, since being ousted from his East African homeland in 1979. Aged 75, his health had been deteriorating for some time.

Under his despotic 1971-79 rule, tens of thousands of people were killed. Some estimates put the figure at more than 100,000.

Driven from Uganda by Tanzanian forces and Ugandan exiles, Amin, a Muslim, was given sanctuary by Saudi Arabia in the name of Islamic charity.

A former boxing champion who once expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler, Amin has lived quietly in Jeddah on a government stipend with four wives.

They really should allow him back into Uganda "to die". This guy may have another trick up his sleeve. And I understand he's totally broke!

Actually I'm hoping he keeps getting near death experiences as to his eternal fate.

But, I thought MSNBC reported his demise.

I heard someone (Dick Cavette, I think it was) on FoxNews say that yesterday CNN broadcast Phillis Diller's "tribute" by mistake. I'm sure she had a laugh over it.

It must be getting more and more difficult to recognize "dead." Saddam and his boys were reported dead 3 or 4 different times; so was Osama. Shades of Clinton's "is" statement. "Well, it depends on what the meaning of "dead" is."
