Party Must Strongly Reposition Itself to Regain White Male Voters' Support, DLC Advised

PHILADELPHIA, July 28 -- Dramatic erosion in support among white men has left the Democrats in a highly vulnerable position and unless the party strongly repositions itself, President Bush will be virtually impossible to beat in 2004, according to a new poll commissioned for the centrist Democratic Leadership Council (DLC).

The gloomy prognosis came despite evidence in the poll and in the assessments of Democratic elected officials attending the DLC's "national conversation" here that the economy alone makes Bush vulnerable for reelection. But Mark J. Penn, who conducted the poll, said that the party's image has regressed since former president Bill Clinton left office and that those weaknesses put Democrats in a weakened position.

Penn said his polling indicates that since Clinton left office in 2001, more Americans believe Democrats are the party of big government and higher taxes and he said Bush's handling of the war on terrorism has opened up a huge gap with Democrats on who is more trusted on issues of national security.

The Democrat primary will feature a knock-down drag out battle between the "centrist" DLC and the far left. In both cases, Bush will likely win in 2004. If the far left assumes control of the party, and doesn't even bother to mask their tax-hiking, big government, soft-on-defense agenda, 2004 will be a breakthrough year for assembling a dominant GOP constitutency for a time to come.

My main concern with Democratic desperation tactics is their leveraging the media in an unsurpassed way to thrash Republicans. Yes, there's been bias but if they really want to, they can use the media to devastate the GOP. You know, I've been saying all along that Hillary! would not run in 2004. I'm about ready to change my mind on that. Look at the evidence of three stories, all breaking the same day:

1. The DLC, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Clinton, Inc., announces this poll, and provides lots of quotes trashing just about every announced candidate on their side,

2. Hillary! -- just by coincidence, on the very same day -- announces the launch of her web site "to start rundraising for her 2006 re-election campaign".

3. Both Clintons announce that they will go out and actively campaign against the California recall, which will be very high profile for both of them. So if the recall fails, they will own Davis, lock, stock and barrel. If the recall succeeds, they still get lots of brownie points from California Democrats for giving it the good old college try.

Anyone who thinks all these things happened on the same day by coincidence is smoking something. And based on the above, I am now officially neutral on the question of Hillary!'s intentions in 2004.
