Gehen lbssand

That's not really understandable. Go lb (abbr. of pound) sand.

"Geh' mal Sand hammern", would be a literal translation, but I've never heard that expression in German.

The old german standby for this situation is "leck mich mal", [K*ss my *ss]. That covers most bases.

I believe there is a movement afoot to convert the land to a national park/preserve to protect the environment rather than turn it over to developers. This will pit the Bobby Kennedy Jr. types against the crass developers. How sweet it is.

Sell Puerto Rico to Castro for $15.00. They can get a nice taste of "liberalism".

"Unanticipated consequences??"

That would be very funny if it wasn't for the fact that real people have lost good jobs because of lame political posturing by self-important gasbags.

Open up Puerto Rico as an immigration point for Haitians.

I don't understand why the Navy didn't just exercise eminent domain, condemn the rest of the little island, pay off the people, kick 'em off, and make the whole island a navy base/firing range

It's not the price of the real estate, it's what it will be worth after Puerto Rico turns it into a swanky beach resort.

That "little island" ain't so little, and there's been some recent moves towards building a resort complex. Eminent domain has to pay markey prices.

The Navy does NOT have enough money to buy an entire island unless they drop other, more necessary, expenditures.

Agreed. I say we dump Puerto Rico. Once the politicians thumbed their collective noses at the US and jumped on the bandwagon just to grab a few local votes, it's time we parted ways. Without Vieques, there is little strategic value left and anything else we need we can buy at about 1/10th the cost we're paying now.

All we need now is a pol willing to write up the bill!

He's talking about the value of Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, not the value of Vieques Range.

A fully-developed port with accompanying industrial base.. . .

we ought to just offer it back to Spain.

Long as that means the residents are no longer american citizens, eligible for my tax dollars, I say great.

"Naval Station Roosevelt Roads has an 11,000-foot runway, nine piers, a water treatment plant, four sewage treatment plants, 110 miles of road, miles of oceanfront, 1,340 buildings and approximately 194,000 square miles of ocean for naval exercises. "

It would probably cost a billion just to prepare the environmental impact statements if you wanted to replicate improvements.

Good analysis but I believe they are looking at the improved potential value for the land after the resort hotels are built on the sites. Not knowing the cost of a proper cleanup of the ordinance I don't know if this is truely economic reality or not.

I don't recall if it was ever proven but it had been alleged during the controversey that land speculators and developers were the finaincial force behind the politicians and demonstrators.
