Yeah, but wasn't the original photo from Vietnam an execution of a Viet Cong? They were the enemy. I think the cartoon is too suggestive and wait until it hits Iraq. I can see it on Saddam's fliers to get them to kill more troops. That cartoon will be misused because it's so suggestive.

"Stupidity scares me."

Right now, and in light of the reaction to this, you should be just about scared to death.

"If the cartoonist had ANY balls, he would have replaced Politics with Demorats."

Except, Democrats are not the only ones tryiong to kill Bush politically.

Look around in this forum.

You're welcome! I only wish I could link more. (Some don't allow direct links.) They're an interesting part of our history.

"Show a cartoon of someone holding a revolver to Hillary's head and watch what happens."

We would be defending it tooth and nail, and invoking the First Amendment.

Picture this cartoon in Iraq, Afghanistan, N. Korea for example. If they can't read English, they won't appreciate the meaning and take it out on our troops. What makes us think that only the US will see this cartoon?

There are better ways to express sympathy for the President than using a violent image. The word "politics" is noticed upon close inspection for only those who can read English.

I'm shocked by Freeper reaction. The moment I saw the cartoon I breathed a sigh of relief and said to myself, "FINALLY, SOMEONE IS EXPRESSING WHAT I'M FEELING!" That is, that the Democrats sole interest is not in criticizing Bush policy, but in destroying him.

Based on your posts so far, you might want to think about letting your cat post for you from now on...

Your 551 post said it all. I remembered that the Viet Cong was the bad guy. Further, look at how kids get sent home from school for pointing a chicken finger like a gun and saying "bang". Do we have zero tolerance for violence in school but the President's fair game?

So, there you have it. My husband is an engineer, daughter is an art school grad, both are IQ's way above normal, and their initial reaction was quite the opposite of what the cartoonist apparently intended. The cartoon is a failure.

That's probably true- I think most people will miss the meaning of this picture. So what? Just because the cartoonist got his point across poorly doesn't mean this is a threat to the President. If the Secret Service is dumb enough to see it as a threat, I'd be worried about their competence when it comes to protecting the President from real threats.

Cannon can also be the plural of the word (i.e. fire from multiple cannon struck the ship below the mainmast, etc....).

500 posts and counting, all because people (including Drudge) are too stupid to realize this is a POLITICAL CARTOON, not a call to shoot Bush. And it's ON THEIR SIDE, EVEN!

Oh, I don't think people are being stupid. Most folks just don't like the image of the gun to W's head. It would not be any "better" if the artist depicted W as Lincoln in Ford's Theatre or a black in the south being hung, etc.

But, it is indeed a political cartoon. And while contemporary editorials don't usually have the raw context of this one historically this type of artistic commentary is not unique. Some of the political cartoons of the early days of the US were as strong or stronger.

No, I don't agree with you that people here are being stupid. And I'm not sure the author is being stupid either in that he has fanned a responsive fire to his work.

I just don't like to see a gun to W's head.
