NO NANNIES NEED APPLY

by Robert Wolf

We are not a democracy. As has often been said, democracy is two wolves and a sheep arguing about what is for dinner. We are (or were meant to be) a Federal Republic, a collaboration of autonomous states headed by a deliberately shackled Federal government.

As citizen of this Federal republic we should be permitted to manage our own risk and to pursue our own destiny; free of the meddling of those who think fast food is bad for us, that motorcyclists must wear helmets, or that we should split up into multi-cultural collectives.

The only legitimate functions of any government are defense and the rule of law i.e. the military to protect us from enemies abroad, the police to protect us from criminals at home, a bureau to register property rights (real and intellectual) and courts to resolve disputes. Anything else is a curtailment of liberty.

What would the founders say about MADD or Concerned Citizens for Cute little Children, or any of the other nannies that you’d care to name?

‘Those who would sacrifice a little freedom for temporal safety deserve neither to be safe or free.’- Benjamin Franklin.

America is about liberty, not the FDA, the EPA, the CWA or any of the other ‘A's’ that promise safety in return for control of our lives. A bird doesn't foul its nest.

France, Germany, Canada, Mexico and many other socialist and mixed economies have lots of ‘A's’, and invite immigration. Lovers of government agencies could live happily ever after in any number of places around the world. I don’t understand why they don’t simply relocate to a happier place. There are two possibilities: they’d rather carp or they have some insidious transmogrification in mind.

‘Posterity --- You will never know how much it has cost my generation for your freedom. I hope you make good use of it’- John Quincy Adams.

A pothead does not a Libertarian make nor is liberty Compassionate Conservatism where one suffers the indignity of adult day (and night) care from a benevolent government. That is a progressive idea. Liberty is the freedom to pursue an unfettered rational self-interest, a libertarian idea. See the difference?

The woman who started Madd has long since resigned since Madd became a Pc donation machine.

That may be incorrect, although it is true that she no longer heads the organization. But what is true is that she has not repudiated the newer industrial strength approach.

My own view is for no limits and vastly stiffer penalties. Some people handle alcohol better than others. Those that don't should practice moderation or be put away for a long time.
