[history]
For the love of God, please, I beg you- no more postings of the 'French Government Bans The Term E-Mail' story. There are already several copies up, and we've pulled many more in the past day.
Have mercy on us. I beg thee.
The same goes for the Google WMD story. Uncle!!!
Only you can prevent duplicates- please search before posting

A bunch of us FReepers are having fun with this email story. Admin, I feel sorry for you.
But I do have a suggestion that may reduce multiple postings. I hate multiple postings as much as anybody. That's why I always do a search before posting (unless it's a vanity, and I hold those to an absolute minimum). But it's obvious there are FReepers that don't search. So, how 'bout a mandatory search?
I can think of several ways of implementing this.
1. You could have a notice on the posting form page to encourage searching.
2. You could force a search before allowing a post (sort of like Topics work now).
3. You could do an automatic search when the FReeper decides to post (like you do now for WP/LAT articles).
Just some ideas.

Only you can prevent duplicates- please search before posting Oh, but You (powers-that-be) can help, with any or all of these:
- Put a warning about the need to Search for duplicates on the Post Article page.
- Put the Search function on the Post Article page.
- (Only if you really want to squash it) During the Post Article process, put the title of the new article through the default Search (Quick, match any word, order by relevance). Present the results to the user.
- Similar to #3, take a 50-character string from the second 100 characters of the article text and see if any article posted in the past 24 hours contains the same string anywhere in its first 300 characters. Present the results to the user.
If you couldn't tell, I'm a programmer who's convinced it's
only 99.44% the users' fault. We user-interface folks have to take some of the blame.
Chances are, if you implement #3 and/or #4, those users who tend to post duplicates today would also tend to ignore the results of all that extra programming effort. ;O)

We figured if we posted it enough, the French would surrender. You beat them to it!
Maybe put a thread of "How to use the search function on FR" in Breaking News for a few days?
