Claudette chases off all but one tree protester

"There's a hurricane?" the sole remaining Memorial Park tree-sitter joked in the rain Tuesday morning, still perched atop a 110-foot tall pine tree.

"Trust," as he refers to himself, is sticking it out through Hurricane Claudette, but he's the only one. His companion, "Bear", came down this morning.

"We knew it was going to get rough," Trust said. "So we decided that only the most experienced person stay up here."

Trust has survived wet and stormy weather for the past week, and he plans to stay there for as long as it takes to get his message delivered: Protect California's ancient redwoods.

He came to Houston from Humboldt County in California, and has been on the perch since July 5.

The protesters brought their demonstration to Houston because it is the home of Maxxam Inc., the owner of Pacific Lumber.

"This is a good test to show Maxxam that we're not going to be scared away by the storm," Trust said.

Wait a minute I'm confused.

This guy went to Houston
To sit in a pine tree
And the reason for this is to protest the felling of
redwoods
in California???

And people wonder why we make fun of leftists.

Tree sitters make funny catapult ammo in a hurricane.

I wonder if anyone explained to them that Maxxam isn't logging in Memorial Park? The company won't care, and shouldn't.

What a bunch of eco-dinks.

I wanted to gather up the Houston Freepers and go give that tree a PUSH now that the ground is saturated! After we shoot a few bottle rockets at his BUTT.

LOL.... last week a house just down the street from mine had a pine tree next to the drive which took a direct hit from lightening... Blew about the top 1/3rd off and onto their garage roof... Not sure how tall it was but I'd estimate it at some 60+ ft. I'd give the tree hugging to the stroms and look for safer confines I believe...

protester
Joshua Trujillo / Chronicle
An anti-logging activist from Northern California, who calls himself "Trust," peeks
out from atop a platform precariously balanced in the top limbs of a 110-foot
pine tree in Memorial Park Monday.

They REALLY shoudl stiffen the penalty for this nonsense. <P.

Maybe if the luber company sued "trust" for the cst fo this delay it would make some kind of difference.
