A group of American makers of wood bedroom furniture is preparing to seek protection from the U.S. government to stem a surge of imports from China that the companies say has ravaged their industry.

John Bassett, president and chief executive of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co., Galax, Va., and a spokesman for the group of 14 furniture makers, said the American Furniture Manufacturers Committee for Legal Trade intends to file an antidumping petition this fall with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission.

I have no problem with Jeff, and I wouldn't with Harp either if he/she kept to the subject instead of personal attacks. Same goes for you.

Please review this thread your first post to me or about me was a personal attack against me you have refused to discuss issues except your personal belief unsupported by any references that protective tariffs are a form of interference in personal liberty. You have refused to admit that protective tariffs have been in place for almost the entire history of the USA. You are vehmently opposed to the economic development of the USA. You refuse to admit that tariffs are the only viable means of dealing with foreign tariffs.

Your safe public school teraching job makes you think you are immune from the economic damage of the positions you take but I further realize that your personal greed will destroy you eventually.

I'll stand with Milton anyday, and dismiss your books and lectures and Nobel prizes. You do have those don't you?

If you had read more than Milton Friedmaqn you would understand that more than one economist has gotten a Nobel Prize which merely means that his work supported the same goal as the Nobel Prize comittee.

I'm sorry, Capriole. I shouldn't have snapped off an e-mail so quickly. I don't know what the answer is either, but it's certainly not to totally destroy the American standard of living and turn us into a third-world country. There were some on that thread who seem to see nothing wrong with bankrupting everyone else if they, themselves, have plenty. That mindset sickens me.

Not surprising that Arkansas still votes for Democrats, eh?

Eh? And you're from Texas?

Actually we have a Republican governor, although some would call him a RINO.

The Democratic Party is still alive and well in Arkansas with 2 Democratic Senators (not to mention the state of Bill Clinton). It's because this "little man" rhetoric (the kind that produces trade tariffs and bloated farm bills) still sells there, sadly.

I like tariffs as a means of raising revenue for the federal govenment.

They are essentially sales taxes on foreigners. A very popular way to tax is to tax people who can't vote against you. It's done all over the place by every taxing authority. Of course the tax always ends up hidden in the price so the people who pay for it are being duped.

Flat tariffs are ok with me if they are low enough.

As an added benifit it helps to protect American industry.

I don't concider that to be a benefit.

I would very much favor ending income tax and using tariffs instead.

I like the first part.

If that means reducing the size of government then that is also fine with me.

Now you are talking. If government did only what their only legitimate purpose was (defending the rights of the people) low flat tariffs would do the trick.

I also like Milton but even he never took the stand that Smoot Hawley was the sole cause of the Depression

Are you impaired or purposely lying again. I never said that so either you can't read or lied. Have you stopped beating your wife yet?

still suggest you learn some History as you say you teach it. Further you should read more than one book in your life it might help you.

More personal attacks. And this is a fine poster? Puleese.

Name the post and I'll check your work.

You have refused to admit that protective tariffs have been in place for almost the entire history of the USA.

Huh? Name that post as well. Are you mentally well?

You are vehmently opposed to the economic development of the USA.

You really should seek help. That is another lie. The funny thing is, anyone who wants to(and nobody wants to) can read all the posts and see that you are making this stuff up. That is a sure sign of illness when you lie knowing that you can be easliy caught.

You refuse to admit that tariffs are the only viable means of dealing with foreign tariffs.

Yes, I disagree with you, which means I refuse to admit that your OPINION is correct, because it ain't necessarily so.

Your safe public school teraching job makes you think you are immune from the economic damage of the positions you take but I further realize that your personal greed will destroy you eventually.

I have already said I'm not a public school teacher. And here comes more attacks. That I'm greedy.

Now do me a favor. Go away. Your posts are inane and purposely incorrect.

Ala, the recent fiasco with your dems taking off for Oklahoma.

You're joking right? That was a last gasp effort by a party already in the minority in the State house and Senate (aside from the Texas GOP having the Governor's mansion, both Senate seats, and the White House). And Texas just happens to be far more pro-free trade than Arkansas as well. What a coincidence.

In what way?

Phil Gramm was one of the greatest free marketeers the U.S. Senate has ever seen. His replacement, John Cornyn, has just proposed an amnesty package for Mexican immigrants and supports NAFTA. And having known many people from both Texas and Arkansas, it's just plain as day that Texans are much more likely to support freedom in trade and economics than Arkansans, thus the reason the Democratic Party is virtually dead in Texas (despite far more minorities in Texas), yet alive and well in Arkansas.

Other than speaking in generalities, you have not shown me any real info that backs up your claim that Texas is more of a free trading state than Arkansas.

For instance, the world's largest testament to free competitive trading is based and founded in Arkansas.

It's called Wal-Mart.

I am really sick to death of yoru personal vilification for God's sake learn some maners and read a book it might well be a new expderience for you. Yopu have stated you teach history and you insited that tariffs were a specvific violation of liberty when it was pointed out that that has not been the history of tariffs you ignored those posts and continued to villify without bothering to even try to adress issues. See posts 105 and 115 for your starting of the the one line villifications. These are the very first posts to or from you and they are both from you. These are your first two posts on this thread. I do not lie and have not lied once on this thread unlike you whose entire contribution to this thread has been lies and insults without once referncing factual information or history. The only economic refernce you cited was the Smoot Hawley tariffs and in such a way the only reference you have to Milton Friedman is by reading some comentary on him not reading his books.

You should not ebngage in lying when the facts are so easily verified by any who read the thread.

Nor have you shown me any evidence that it's not. My original statement was that the continued strength of the Democratic Party in Arkansas is an obvious testament to the power the "little man" rhetoric still holds there (and the anti-free trade game works best in this crowd). Texas is strongly GOP (despite a huge minority population). Arkansas is still strongly Democratic (both Senate seats Democratic). Why?

Here is a statistic for you:

By the year 2025, China's population will likely peak 1.5 to 1.6 billion people. The peasants must raise grain output to 650-700 million tones from nearly 500 million tons per year. If they do not, China will need to import more grain than is currently traded in the whole world.

If they go to more modern methods of farming. Far fewer peasants will be needed. Then they will have a situation of increased food production but millions of peasants with no land and no jobs. China is then faced with the question of what to do with the excess people.
