did several searches, couldn't find this. Expect someone to tell me it's already posted.

In the book "On Stategy, A Critical Analysis of the Vietnam War" by Harry Summers, He brings out how Creighton Abrams went out of his way to redesign the Army (inculding Reserves and NG) such that the military could not go to war without mobilizing the reserves, thereby inciting the national will.

Now Rummy wants to undo that. Hard to be firm, however, I think I'm semi in Rummy's corner, the Army (and other services) should be able to deploy as a package with having to activate the reserves.

However, as a reservist, I was part of the 101st Airborne Division. In Rummy's new military, I would never have had that priviledge.

...such that the military could not go to war without mobilizing the reserves, thereby inciting the national will.

I highly doubt any "national will" would be spurred by any ARNG/Reserve call-up. Either the cause itself is enough, or it isn't. Then there are the commies who just aren't happy regardless of what our troops are doing, but who cares what they think?

It seems what Rummy is really saying is that the active duty forces have got to be more diversified and able to do all the things that Reservists are doing now....

seems to me he is admitting that gosh, gee, our Guard and Reservist have been really carrying a huge load for this country and doing a mighty good job of it.....

Oh geez, a guy who actually wants the military to be structured more like it was intended. Simply amazing.

What I was thinking and what bothers me about this new plan.

If you're going to do this and still recruit enough good people to fill the slots. Then ya gotta raise the pay and benefits, and ya gotta take care of your vets.

You can't have anymore VA horror stories and no more soldiers on food stamps.

At the risk of invoking a lot of wrath from a lot of good folks on here, I might suggest that one way to keep the Guard and Reaserves from being called up so often is to quit sending troops into places they don't need to be (the Balkans, Liberia (soon)....)

So what does this have to do with the Guard? The Federal Government is not dictating how the States should run their militia are they?

That is my question too. I am trying to make a life-changing decision whether to join the OK Guard or not, and I am trying to find out everything I can. I have a college degree, so I would be going into Officer school. If I joined, it would be part-time. Any of you that know, how likely is a person in that position to be called to duty in Liberia or S. Korea or wherever? I have a family, and being away from them is what is making the decision very difficult. I always thought the National Guard was for protecting the home front, while the other military units were the ones who fought overseas.

Is anyone keeping a running tab on how much POWER is being concentrated into the post of Homeland Defense ?

From what I remember
Coast Guard
INS
National Reserves (proposed)

The secretary of Homeland Defense has more combat power under his control than the vice President.

Maybe it's me but it almost seems like an SS or SA level organization is being made in America.
