NEW YORK - Tom Cruise said he learned to overcome his learning disability through Scientology.
"When I was about 7, I had been labeled dyslexic," he told People magazine for its July 21 issue. "I'd try to concentrate on what I was reading, then I'd get to the end of the page and have very little memory of anything I'd read. I would go blank, feel anxious, nervous, bored, frustrated, dumb."
After "Top Gun" came out in 1986, Cruise became a Scientologist and discovered the "Study Technology" the religion's founder, L. Ron Hubbard, developed in the 1960s.
"I realized I could absolutely learn anything that I wanted to learn," Cruise said.
Now the 41-year-old actor is a founding board member of the Hollywood Education and Literacy Project, a nonprofit group that uses Hubbard's teaching techniques in a secular setting.
"I don't want people to go through what I went through," Cruise said. "I want kids to have the ability to read, to write, to understand what people are saying to them, to be able to solve life's problems."

What religion is calling another kooky? Some people are calling Tom Cruise a fool for believing a particular cult cured his alleged dyslexia perhaps, but I don't hear any religions talking.

Actually that was to dispell those nasty rumors about him. Of course, the Scientologists probably have tapes of Cruise confessing all to them. Which might explain the rush to supposedly take up right away with a woman. Ohhh, I forgot about those rumors.

One of the reasons that Nicole and Tom's marriage fell apart was the fact that in spite of her "indoctrination" into Scientology, she still yearned for the moral and spiritual foundation that she had received from Catholicism. I thought they had a pretty solid marriage. I was surprised when they got a divorce. If you haven't seen the movie "The Others", you should rent it. She's a very good actress....

Uhhh, he divorced her... I should have said that they got a divorce since I didn't know which one of them instigated it. My bad...

I flipped open
People for a different article and found this long essay from Cruise lauding Scientology, and couldn't believe my eyes. The thing was a free multi-page advertisement for the worshippers of Almighty Ron.
I am guessing that this is what it took for People -- and perhaps TimeWarner by extension -- to remain in Cruise's good graces. If he ever wants to get married again, they don't want to be shut out of the reprint rights to photos.
