Jumping in here to say that I deliberately did NOT read any article that said the President had LIED ... because I knew that statement would not be true. I've been rankled when I heard "Bush lied" coming from the mouth of Peter Jennings ... I've heard that statement all day. Since I'm beginning to get a picture of how this came about ... I cannot tell you how angry I am ...
Put your source our here for the FReepers, Doug ... and be thankful that there is this remarkable band of patriots who can sort out good from evil ...

I called some friends in other GOP offices and they said yes, they knew Terry Wilkinson. ... "You can trust him, he's one of the good guys," one chief of staff told me. Then a CIA source I trust said the agency had no record of a contract consultant with that name. "Nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever heard of this guy," my source said. ... Then a friend from the Hill called. ... "You've been had," she said. "I know about this guy. He's been around for years, claiming to have been in Special Forces, with the CIA, with NSA. He hasn't worked for any of them and his name is not Terrance Wilkinson." Lessee. Some insiders know of TW and think that he is for real. Others know all about him, but know that he is a fake. Well known and seen from Albuquerque to DC, passing around his card and giving out information. Claims to have worked in Air America, the FBI, and as a consultant for the CIA. As much as he got around, passing around his card, and gained a reputation with insiders -- sometimes as a real guy but other times as a fake -- and the CIA has never heard of him? How can this guy be so well known to so many people, throwing around references like the FBI, CIA, and Air America, and the CIA has never heard of him?
Gotta open up the windows here and air it out, 'cause the stench has gotten really bad.

We were all to believe Doug Thompson yesterday when he claimed Wilkinson was a very reliable source as he called the president a liar. Today we are to believe this phantom source "Wilkinson" was a fraud because an un-named source says he is. I'm not convinced Wilkinson ever existed and so far Mr. Thompson hasn't provided anything to prove that he did. 20 years of using him as a source and NO way to get in touch with him?????

I agree Mr. T. --although there's something or other that is ironic about this, coming from "Jhoffa_" that I can't... quite... seem to... (ahem) find.

Wow is right. Does Fox have this story, because they've based some of their recent WMD reporting on Capitol Hill Blue stories.

FYI, I received the following email from the editor of Japan today after I emailed them about running the article from Truthout that was apparently lifted, without attribution or permission, from Capitol Hill Blue:
Dear Sirs,
I am the editor of Japan Today, an English Internet news publication based in Tokyo.
Yesterday in our World section, we ran a story from truthout.org (which we subscribe to) about Bush lying about WMDs.
We have since learned it was inaccurate and removed it. I read the story by Doug Thompson today on your web site and would like permission to use it on Japan Today, crediting Capitol Hill Blue.
Yours sincerely,
Chris Betros
Editor
Japan Today
We gave them permission, of course, and will contact any other publication that picked up the article and ask them to run the correction.
I'd love to stick around and answer every one of these 200+ posts, but I've got a lot of work to do and very little time left in the day. Thanks for your time. I'll check in later.
Doug

While I may be reluctant to believe future stories from yourself, I still consider this apology and retraction to be an honorable thing to do.
Well at least you made DU's head explode with the retraction ;-)
Geez poor WillPitt first Statutory Scottie and now this.

The DNC is behind this guy and we need to all e-mail FNC and Rush to get the story out. Many stories in print and tv have been based on this erroneous source.

Right now, you have to prove you didn't make this guy up, as the stakes are a bit higher with the charge that "Bush Lied".Can you do that?

Leaving Terrance to your attorney and a potential meeting with the FBI is tantamount to complicity in this "crime"! Post what you have Doug! Unless you paid him, I see nothing but a legal black hole by passing Terrance's information to an attorney. As far as the FBI goes, saying that he was a paid consultant to the CIA is not the same as saying he was the CIA.
I know you are busy, send me the stuff and I'll make sure it gets posted.

Ha ha ha. Shouldn't this read:
"He's been around for years, claiming to have been in Special Forces, with the CIA, with NSA. He hasn't worked for any of them and his name is not Steven Segal."

I've spent the last two hours going through the database of Capitol Hill Blue stories and removing any that were based on information from Wilkinson (or whoever he is). I've also removed his name, quotes and claims from Tuesday's story about the White House and the uranium claims. Mightn't it be better to leave the stories in place but with a warning? Just 'disappearing' them isn't going to make them go away; you need to have a solid denial of their authenticity that anyone can look up.

I don't buy this... we are supposed to believe that you printed crap from this guy for 20 years and you found out in 24 hours that he doesn't exist? I'm with you. My BS detector is clanging big time.
Where were these shadowy CIA and White House "sources" before the story was published? Wouldn't it be reporting 101 to make a quick call these sources to check out the story before printing such potentially explosive charges against a sitting president? (Especially since the bogus quotes attributed to the president featured the classic trademark of being a lie: they were just too "on the nose.")
To my way of thinking, even if every word of Mr. Thompson's mea culpa is sincere, this episode still represents a gross negligence of the most basic of journalistic duties and concepts of fairness.
