Federal officials said a preliminary translation of the dossier indicated that it contained Iraqi intelligence reports from an "agent/asset" in the United State code-named "Sirhan," who officials said was Dumeisi.

Dumeisi has lived in the United States for about a decade and is a permanent resident alien, according to immigration records. Officials said he told them he is a Jordanian citizen born in Palestine.

Dumeisi was arrested based on a complaint that identifies him as the president and registered agent of a company that publishes an Arabic monthly periodical.

Among other things, Dumeisi was trained by Saddam Hussein's intelligence agents to use a pen with a hidden camera and microphone, according to federal officials.

They said he later used it to record an interview with a member of an Iraqi opposition group critical of Saddam Hussein.

According to the complaint, four unnamed cooperating individuals, including a self-described former Iraqi intelligence officer, also provided information about Dumeisi's activities. The three others were associated with his Arabic periodical.

FBI agents said Dumeisi was in contact with four people at Iraq's United Nations mission who were actually intelligence officers. One of the four was expelled from the country by the State Department in June 2002 on suspicion of spying, the FBI said.

Dumeisi allegedly told one of the unnamed sources that he received $2,000 or $3,000 from Iraqi intelligence to help gather information on opposition figures living in the United States.

Burbank, Illinois? Hmmm, both Oak Lawn and Burbank are near Palos Heights & I think one of the post 9/11 busts was a guy who ran an Islamic charity in Palos Heights. I think he was the guy who was with bin Laden in the '80's.

For the life of me, I can't remember his name....

I don't think you can arrest people for that since the Lawrence decision.

FBI Says U.S. Muslim Charity Lied to Investigators

U.S. authorities raid offices of an Islamic charity in November 2001

CHICAGO, April 30 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - U.S. officials arrested the head of a Muslim charity here Tuesday on perjury charges, and accused him of having links with Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network stretching back 10 years.

Members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Enaam Arnauot, the 39-year-old executive director of Benevolence International Foundation (BIF), at his home in suburban Chicago early Tuesday.
The Syrian-born U.S. citizen is expected to appear in U.S. district court here later Tuesday on charges that he lied in federal court documents about links to “international terrorism,” the local states attorney's office said in a statement.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said, "The complaint alleges Benevolence International Foundation was supporting violence secretly."

Arnauot and the charity he heads, have been trying to overturn a U.S. Treasury Department order freezing the organization’s assets and records.

The Palos Heights, Illinois, charity was one of several U.S.-based Muslim charities shut down by U.S. officials last year in a crackdown on charitable organizations thought to be funneling money to regimes the U.S. considers “terrorist.”

The foundation insists it has nothing to do with “terrorism.”

But in seeking to challenge U.S. authorities, local prosecutors allege Arnaout made false statements about BIF's activities, claiming it had clean hands when in fact it was supplying logistical and financial support to al-Qaeda.
In a raid of a Bosnian Benevolence International on March 19, photographs, dating back to the 1980s of bin Laden in Afghanistan, as well photos of Arnaout holding several weapons were found.

U.S. government informants said Arnaout at one time handled money for bin Laden. Another government witness cooperating with the FBI said the organization was used in the early 1990s by bin Laden to transfer money to bank accounts of relief organizations that also supplied funds to other organizations.

The charges include allegations that BIF associated with a man who allegedly tried to acquire nuclear weapons for bin Laden.

The FBI asserts that the foundation sponsored Mamdouh Salim, a bin Laden associate, for a trip to Bosnia. Salim, the affidavit says, had at one time attempted to get nuclear and chemical weapons for the al-Qaeda organization, reports news agencies.

An FBI affidavit said that the organization was, according to documents seized in Bosnia, founded by a wealthy Saudi sheik, Adil Abdul Galil Betargy, a bin Laden associate.

Arnauot's name is spelled Arnaout on government documents, e.g.:

Transcript of Attorney General John Ashcroft Regarding Guilty Plea by Enaam Arnaout February 10, 2003

I'm confused .. when did spies have to start registering?

Foreign "agent" doesn't mean spy, legally speaking.

For example, lobbyists, PR firms, and lawyers working for foreign governments are all agents. They are mostly legit, but they have to register.

Thanks for the ping.

I'm sure that he is just the tip of the iceberg re Islamofacists in America.

This will cause some severe need of Imodium amongst the various supporters of $oddomite and the Islamofascists here in the USA.

We can hope that he spread a lot of money around and kept good records.

Oak Lawn is located right on the border of Chicago, about 5 miles south of Midway Airport.

Boom town after WWII, similar to Levittstown, NY. A "white ethnic" haven (Irish, Poles, Italians) at one time. Lots of Arabs have been moving in of late, Bridgeview, where there is a huge mosque, is just to the northwest of Oak Lawn. Lots of Arabs have moved in to be near that mosque.

The Global Relief Foundation, an Islamic "charity" was based in Bridgeview, until the Feds shut them down for having numerous terrorist ties.

Oak Lawn is right next to Chicago; we have a pop. of about 60-65,000. The place busted in Palos Hills was called, I think, The Islamic Benevolence Center, or some such thing. We have a huge mosque about 3 miles directly west of us in Bridgeview. We're kind of a polyglot area with quite a few Roman Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslim. When I go into Walmart I'm more likely to hear Spanish, Polish, or Arabic before I hear any English.

Benevolence International, the other southwest suburban Islamic "charity," was based in Palos Hills, not Palos Heights. The two communities often get mistaken for each other. Both are very close (less than five miles) to Oak Lawn.
