Pancakes in the Desert
Mmmmmm.....pancakes! Bet you can't guess where we're going today, boys and girls. What? You've never been to Arizona's big pancake in the desert? You've never heard of the Wilcox playa? You say you don't even know what a playa is? Well, now, we're just going to have to do some ed-yoo-kayt'n here!
From the Playa at Wilcox Arizona these are but a few of the Sandhill Cranes that arrive from as far away as Siberia and winter here thriving on the grain crops grown nearby. This picture was taken January 26, 2002. This flock was caused to fly by a Bobcat in the area.
PLAYAS
Though named playas (PLY-yas, Spanish for beaches), the dry lakes that dot the western deserts in the United States and Mexico don't bring the ocean to mind. Most often, these flat, hardened lakebeds are desolate places that seem better suited for otherworldly adventures like landing the Space Shuttle (at Edwards Air Force Base, California) or setting the world's first supersonic land speed record (in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada). During the last Ice Age, when the climate was much cooler and wetter, most southwestern playas were filled with waterlakes in landlocked drainage basins between mountain ranges. Even Death Valley once cradled a glistening lake. As the climate warmed to today's temperate conditions, lake water evaporated, leaving dissolved minerals behind. Because storm runoff from nearby mountains transports dissolved salts to lake basins below, playas are often thickly layered with salt deposits.
Although usually seen as bleak, flat, dry landscapes, playas come to life in the rain. Just one desert downpour can cover acres of a dry lakebed with a thin sheet of waterlooking for all the world like a mirage. Willcox Playa in southeastern Arizona hosts thousands of sandhill cranes each winter (24,000 during the 1998-99 season). These four-foot-tall birds roost in the shallow water, safe from coyotes and bobcats, and spend their days foraging on leftovers in nearby cornfields. The lake teems with tiny fairy shrimp, food for thousands of smaller wading birds. In February and March, the cranes venture north again, as far as Alaska, to breed. With the approach of summer, the lake vanishes, appearing only as a mirage until the next rain.
Playing Catch on the Wilcox Playa during a Field Trip, May 2003. Notice the mirage effect in the distance...the Chiricahua Mountains in the background seem to float above the nonexistent water on the dry lakebed of the playa.

CHECK THIS OUT EVERYBODY! Our very own txradioguy, on scene in Baghdad sends a report....... "Thought you might like to see this one. These guys are true heroes in ANY one's book. The soldiers are from Hawk Troop 1st Calvary. They are the brigade's recon troop. Enjoy."
HAWK TROOP SAVES IRAQI FAMILY
By Spc. John S. Wollaston (txradioguy)
3BCT PAO
What started out as a sweep through a Baghdad neighborhood for improvised explosive devices like those that have wounded U.S. Soldiers over the last few weeks, turned into a rescue mission for the 3rd Brigades reconnaissance troop. In what intelligence later revealed to be an elaborate trap for the 2nd Battalion 70th Armor Regiments Quick Reaction Force, two rocket propelled grenades slammed into liquor store and a hand grenade was tossed into a house two blocks from the store. Both structures were set ablaze by the grenades. The explosions occurred moments after the BRTs 2nd Platoon discovered I.E.D.s near the liquor store placed approximately 75 meters apart.
The unknown attackers original plan had been to lure the 2-70ths QRF to the area with the blasts, then detonate the I.E.D. when the QRF approached. But because of the discovery of the explosives by the BRT and the speed in which the soldiers cordoned off the area, the attackers were unable to proceed with the second part of their attack.
Making this story even more amazing was the heroism displayed by the soldiers of 2nd Platoon, who rushed headlong into the burning liquor store to rescue the owner his wife and three daughters trapped on the roof of their house located above the building.
Anyone would have done it. Said 2nd Platoons Staff Sergeant Joseph R. Dirks.
When we went in there is was just an automatic thing. I wasnt worried about my safety, my only concern was getting anyone trapped in the building out safely. The storeowner, his wife and 3 daughters were rescued safely from the blaze. None of the family members or the soldiers of second platoon received any injuries in the incident.
