"...I am a big fan of Tony's op-ed pieces on the California Members' Council list. He rivals anyone in the country in his ability to ferret out the true nature of the American establishment, whether it be political, jounalistic, or judicial. Congratulations to NRAMembersCouncils.com in attracting such good talent!..." |

Imagine a children's book where:
-An important part of the story requires that the hero proves to a jury 's satisfaction that an act of self-defense was "reasonable", despite limiting regulations;
-Where all of the main characters carry their "weapon of choice" concealed upon their persons, including minors admittedly underage, but without benefit of a permit system;
-Where both adult characters and youth characters form militia-like "defense associations" so as to be able to deal with evil characters that have undue and corrupt influence over the applicable government;
-And where adult characters (teachers yet) aid in the resistance to governmental order as a sign of civil disobedience, including "armed" resistance when (unjust) arrest is threatened.
But it is not as one would think at first blush. These are not from some book about a post-Apocalyptic Australia, or the ranting of some fringe group with Aryan Nation ties.
In fact, all of the above situations can be found, more or less, in the latest book by J. K. Rowling. Entitled Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix... Read the rest at http://nramemberscouncils.com/newsbriefs/030623.shtml

Before I read the entire article, I thought..."Ya know, Harry Potter novels are a great example of self defense..."

Yah, it's very interesting to see that from a british author. Even note that when the wizards go into the ministry of magic offices, they ahve to register their wands, but they get to keep them -- they "checker" just makes a note that they entered with what kind of wand, that's all. The parallels are close enough to be really something to think about, esp. considering it's a british author.

I read this book the weekend it came out (yes, I'm a total geek) and was blown away with some of its 'subversive' elements re: self defense, too much government, etc.
Perhaps being the richest woman in England second only to the Queen has changed Rowling's perspective a bit on the wonders of a weapon free (and supposedly safer) society.

Heck, she's richer than the Queen. I'm really getting jealous of all you who've read it. I've got two sisters in line who have to finish it first.

Geez! I'm amazed that Brit (of all things) would come out in favor of self-defense, but whatever happened to Johnny Tremaine?

I don't know J.K Rowling's position on guns. And even with all these natural rights concepts included in her book, it still wouldn't surprise me if she has typical liberal gun phobia. They occassionally do know "what is right", but just can't make that leap to accepting "GUNS".

I've got two sisters in line who have to finish it first. It's worth the wait, but check out the audio CD set narrated by Jim Dale--I have the entire series (Yes, I am officially an uber geek) and they're really fun to listen to!

In the Harry Potter series, there's a lot about being able to defend yourself, but never thru the use of lethal force (except on things like giant snakes)
