Marin Poised to Run, Breaux Waffles
The Hill ^ | JULY 2, 2003 | The Hill

WEST

California. Rosario Marin stepped down Monday as the 41st treasurer of the United States, paving the way for a possible challenge in 2004 to Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer.

Marin, a Republican, formerly served in GOP Gov. Pete Wilson’s administration as legislative analyst for the Department of Developmental Services. She was also mayor of Huntington Park.

California political consultant Kevin Spillane said Marin would make an announcement this month about running against Boxer, whose lukewarm fundraising and liberal voting record have made her a prime Republican target in 2004. Toni Casey, the Republican mayor of Los Altos Hills, already has announced she will seek the GOP Senate nomination.

SOUTH

Louisiana. Like fellow Democratic Senators Bob Graham in Florida and John Edwards in North Carolina, Louisiana’s John Breaux can’t seem to decide whether he wants to run for reelection in 2004.

The hold-up comes from the state’s gubernatorial race. There are seven Republicans and five Democrats running. “Sen. Breaux will not make a decision about his plans until a new governor is chosen,” a Breaux spokesman said.

I pray that The GOP wins the State House in Louisiana so that Breaux will more likely to not seek re-elction.

Marin will not defeat Boxer unless Howard Dean wins the Democratic nomination - which I don't believe he will (I still think Kerry will take the nomination).

And even if Dean is at the top of the ticket, it will probably only give Marin a 50-50 shot at winning.

But in any event, this will demonstrate once and for all if the Rove's "Hispanic Outreach" program is effective.

If a Hispanic GOP candidate can't get better than 26% of the California Hispanic vote (And that is what I believe will happen), then I assure you the GOP pressure on the White House to lower Hispanic immigration will become unbearable, and Bush will significantly reduce Hispanic immigration in 2005.

It would be better, IMHO, if the Republicans didn't try to PANDER to the Hispanic vote. Many Hispanic citizens are said to be willing to see stricter enforcement of the immigration laws, as long as it's clear that it's not a racist matter. People used to argue about lifting the restrictions on various groups of immigrants, but the Dems shouldn't be allowed to get away with supporting illegal immigration.

"Republicans didn't try to PANDER to the Hispanic vote."

We'll see.

2004 is Karlos Rova's Hispandering Strategy's last Hurrah.

If Rove can't get better than 35% of the Hispanic vote http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/934148/posts again, then I assure you, the GOP will drop Hispanic immigration substantially.

I don't think you'll get to test that theory because I doubt she will win the primary.

"I don't think you'll get to test that theory because I doubt she will win the primary."

You think Pete Wilson is going go into battle against Boxer?

Or do you have someone else in mind?

It depends upon what happens in the recall election. If I were Marin, I wouldn't want to run in a Republican primary against Tom McClintock or Ray Haynes.

"It depends upon what happens in the recall election."

Arnold is going to run, and he'll win, unless DiFi runs (and I don't think she would want to be responsible for cleaning up California's fiscal mess).

"If I were Marin, I wouldn't want to run in a Republican primary against Tom McClintock or Ray Haynes."

Are any of these guys interested in US senate? Boxer is going to be an extremely formidable opponent!

McClintock could probably come close against Boxer, and having him in the US Senate would be awesome.

What do you think of Haynes?

Cheers!

BTW, this State's got serious problems and this is a real opportunity considering that Boxer is such a loon.

Rove should take his dubious "experiminting" somewhere else. I'd bet if he really studied a few of the Congressional races over the last two cycles he'd already have his answer.

Gimme a break. She works so hard to look like the loon she is that there's no excuse for not winning this one. CAGOP really blew it by running Campbell against ChiFi, because he'd have taken her without breaking a sweat. If ChiFi comes back here to run for something, we should just trot out the crooked real estate deals she's lubricated for her husband, especially Chocolate Mountain.

Come on back to California, Diane. We've got a nice warm jail cell just waiting for yooooo!

"Rove should take his dubious "experiminting" somewhere else."

I'm afraid if Marin decides to go into battle, Karlos will ensure the the White House backs her to the hilt.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I'd LOVE to unseat Boxer, on the other hand, I would love to show decisevly once and for all that Hispandering DOES NOT WORK!

I think Long term, it's extremely important to show to the GOP that Hispandering is a lost cause - ergo - I'm hoping Marin gets the nomination.

PS

Good luck to you GOPers in Titanifornia :(

What do you think of Haynes?

Very sharp. Excellent communicator. Young. Good looking. Principled conservative. Needs a few creative ideas to show how conservative principles can solve vexing social and fiscal problems.

Breaux is more likely to retire if a Democrat wins the governorship, it would seem to me. In the unlikely event that the Republicans hold on to the governorship in LA (and I see no possibility of that happening at this point), Breaux will say that he must run again to "save" the LA "democracy" from possibly three consecutive defeats in one year -- governor, senator, president.

Interesting...

But if the GOP wins the Governorship, that means, if Breaux decides to run again, he'd be stuck in the Senate until Jan 1st 2008, because if he retired before 2008, the GOP Governor would pick his replacement.

But if a Democrat wins, then he can run for reelection to the Senate, and then Immediately retire after he wins, allowing a Dem to pick his replacement.

I hope the Terminator does not run, and if he does, I hope he loses. He's nothing but a RINO married to the far-left Camelots. How would he solve the CA mess---shoot all the RATS with his heavy Terminator armament?

Actually, if the state defaults in August, I believe the state has to create an entirely new budget from scratch.

The state looks like it will be officially bankrupt by this August, so a lot of the overspending problems might be solved before he becomes Governor in the Fall, IF the state has to remake an entirely new budget...

Maybe I should have been more specific and said that we shouldn't pander to the Hispanics, but we should appeal to them honestly, because without a reasonable percentage of the Hispanic vote the GOP nationally will have a dismal future.

California is a special case because of Pete Wilson's serious mishandling of the matter while he was governor, which convinced most Hispanics that he was a racist.

So, I don't disagree with Rove's emphasis on the Hispanic vote. I just don't think he understands some of the issues. For instance, that many Hispanics are instinctively pro-life, pro-family and socially conservative. It's the same as with the blacks. We need to appeal to them, but not by trying to out-pander the Democrats.
