[history]
Last week the Supreme Court ruled that states may not criminalize homosexual sodomy, and strongly implied that no sexual relationship between consenting adults may be legally disfavored. That sweeping decision is sure to be cited by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court if it rules this month, as many expect, that gay and lesbian couples in the Bay State have the right to marry. That in turn will trigger a nationwide explosion of litigation, trepidation, and condemnation. What Newsweek calls in its current issue ''The War Over Gay Marriage'' will be underway.

...Americans have in many ways become more accepting of homosexuality.Wrong, Americans have become more tolerant of homosexuality, not accepting.

I'm not worried about gays leaving traditional marriage in favor of gay marriage. I'm just dead-set against legalizing gay marriage which makes a mockery of man/woman unions, serves no beneficial purpose and goes against everything taught in the Torah, the Bible and likely even in the Koran.

My beef about this is that it makes it that much easier for gays to adopt. It is an outrage that they are allowed to adopt. Who are the primary role models in a childs life? An objective study would prove that children raised by gays are more prone to homosexuality or bisexuality than those raised by a heterosexual couple. This would also dispel the myth being gay is gentically predetermined.

Of course, it doesn't mean that Vermont's civil union law broke up 2,000 straight couples. It does mean that where there used to be 2,000 traditional marriages, there are now 2,000 ruptured ones - and 2,000 gay or lesbian unions in their place. Were some of those marriages doomed from the outset? Probably. But it's also probable that some of them weren't How can *any* marriage not be doomed from the start if one of the pair is confused enough to eventually want to marry someone of their same gender?
I'm not a fan of gay marriage but the author's implication that the ability to marry a same-sex partner is breaking up hetero marriages is a real stretch, IMHO.

"Of those couples, close to 40 percent, or more than 2,000, include at least one partner who used to be married."
Pretty bizarre reasoning... This is the best he can do in coming up with a problem with gay marriage? That some gay men might break up their sham marriages to women in order to run down to the courthouse and get hitched with other guys?
I'm just guessing here, but if I were a straight woman, I can imagine the following order of preference:
1. Never getting married to a gay man in the first place.
2. Not being married to a gay man any more.
3. Still being married to a gay man who's not really
interested in me, views sex with me as a nasty duty, and may be sleeping around on me.
Hopefully we'll get to a point in society where gay men will stop feeling the need to marry and ruin the lives of straight women in order to "fit in."

I wonder if the constraints on "disfavor" of homosexual practice extends to sexual harassment equality? Could a straight charge a gay with harassment in the workplace?
I probably know that answer already.

He may have made an argument against marriage if so many end up wanting to marry a member of the same sex. Must of been some really bad nightmare marriage.

That is a victory for conservative values, where you force even opponents to adopt your values. Which is precisely why I think, once the fad wears off, we will see very, very few gay marriages. Gay men in particular have little interest in monogamous relationships, they are just trying to tweak "the Right". Once people stop paying attention to them and they realize that there are some serious potential threats to their lifestyle that come with actually being married, very few will actually opt to go through with the ceremony.

Allowing the legal recognition of same sex marriage will cause many negative unintended consequences, far beyond the samll percentage of homosexuals in the population.
I have been a single, married, and divorced woman.
I am now a single mother, who works full time, with company provided benefits, of which health insurance is the most important priority.
Would same sex marriage benefit me financially? Yes, of course!I could team up with another friend who is a single mother, and we could pull off this great Kate and Allie lifestyle.
But...how long will it take for the majority of businesses to determine that providing benefits to employees such as myself, does not really benefit their business, in recruiting and retaining stable employees? I can see it becoming a point of contention rather quickly.
I never really cared when I was single or divorced, that married people were offered "family" insurance rates. I was at times not actively participating in a "family", but only a lunatic or a liberal refuses to comprehend that a normal "family" consisting of a mother, father and children is the optimal bedrock foundation for the continuation of our society.
That my particular "family" differs from the optimal, does not mean that I think the definition of the optimal family unit should change.
I want my child to grow up,fall in love, get married, and have children. That scenario is the best goal for adult happiness and a full, richly rewarding life.
Not all of us can attain or maintain it,but that does not mean that it is not still the ideal goal.
Just because I live an "alternative lifestyle", does not mean I want to adjust society as a whole to define down normal.
BTW, I am heterosexual, but if same sex marriages are made legal, they can not be limited to homosexuals,as that would be discrimination based on sexual orientation!
Why fix what is not broken?
