A Patrick Henry College graduate of the inaugural class recently accepted a full-time position at the White House. This job placement is another milestone for the college and a testament to the school's mission of training Christian leaders.
Rebekah McDonald, a 2002 graduate, accepted a position in the Bush Administration as the Executive Assistant to the Director of Strategic Initiatives in the White House. Her responsibilities are administrative and include research and writing assignments as well. Rebekah's position offers her some of the best practical experience possible for someone interested in influencing politics and government.
As a PHC graduate, Rebekah is well aware that her most important assignment comes from an authority higher than even the President of the United States. She has an opportunity to be salt and light in one of the most powerful offices in the world, which is remarkable when you consider that she was a college student just nine months ago.
"This is further proof that the college's vision of training future leaders for tomorrow is a clear reality," said Mike Farris, president of the college. "Our students are already making a difference." PHC faculty and staff are working hard every day training more students who will soon be following in the footsteps of pioneers like Rebekah.
Upon graduating from Patrick Henry last May, Rebekah applied for a White House internship. Not only was she accepted into the internship program, she was also assigned a position in the Office of the Senior Advisor to the President, Karl Rove.
She describes her first day as "insane." Fifteen minutes into her new job, her boss left for a meeting with instructions that Rebekah could interrupt only if the president called. That first day she was briefed on an incredible amount of information.
And with a job like that who could escape highlights? In her third week of work she took a call from the Oval Office. President Bush's secretary called for Mr. Rove, and before McDonald could get Mr. Rove on the line, Bush's secretary patched the president through. "After he hung up I turned to the guy next to me and said, 'Henry, I just talked to the President of the United States!' I started shaking, I was so shocked."
The internship led to her new permanent position within the Administration.

However, over the last four years, it has become apparent that MMA was the better choice. I have a relative by marriage--a retired NAVY Lieutenant, engineer, Annapolis grad--who now is chief at a major power plant in Boston. He has several engineers that work for him. He, "The one that I rely on... the one who actually knows how to get the turbines and transformers off the trucks, install them, and make them work, is a Mass Maritime grad........they must be doing something right there....he knows stuff I don't know."
The door is open at MMA for homeschoolers. I can't praise the place highly enough. They are a state school, but there is a minumum of PC interference in the meritocracy.
BTW....a life-long homeschooler, who did his final year of HS at a Catholic school...mom and dad were'nt sure about doing it themselves....just graduated from the NAVY Academy, too. Friend of Shanna's.

Perhaps my perspective is a bit skewed because my oldest child is only 12. Some days it seems like none of them is more mature than the 3yo, and it's hard to visualize their ever being adults with sense ...
and it's still raining in my bubble, too :-).
Patrick Henry- what a great place! They were in a speaking competition, that included Ivy Leagues, and won the top 6 places. They take their speaking and debating very seriously!
There is a lovely HSed girl I met through our homeschooled national speech and debate league, that will be attending PH next year. You should hear this gal debate! What an intelligent, go-getter. She'll go far, before she marries and settles down. Perhaps God intends for these lovely, intelligent young women to find their future husbands someplace other than home.
Michael Farris was a judge for us at our national speech and debate tournament this year; he started the league years ago. It was a fantastic experience, although I missed a lot, as I served on the judge coordinator committee. We had lawyers and professors from law schools come and tell us how their students could not hold a candle to our homeschooled high school students in their public speaking and debate abilities. It has been worth it all:-) We parents are certainly smiling and praising God!
I have to mention that I think the attacks upon the one Mom here are out of place; what parent would not have concerns sending their children into the world of Washington DC? Just ask the parents to Chandra Levy.
Looks like we have lots of (potential) friends and allies over here!
