Patrick Henry College Graduate Lands Full-Time Job in the White House
Patrick Henry College ^ | Winter 2003

Posted on 07/01/2003 12:52:25 PM PDT by Tai_Chung

A Patrick Henry College graduate of the inaugural class recently accepted a full-time position at the White House. This job placement is another milestone for the college and a testament to the school's mission of training Christian leaders.

Rebekah McDonald, a 2002 graduate, accepted a position in the Bush Administration as the Executive Assistant to the Director of Strategic Initiatives in the White House. Her responsibilities are administrative and include research and writing assignments as well. Rebekah's position offers her some of the best practical experience possible for someone interested in influencing politics and government.

As a PHC graduate, Rebekah is well aware that her most important assignment comes from an authority higher than even the President of the United States. She has an opportunity to be salt and light in one of the most powerful offices in the world, which is remarkable when you consider that she was a college student just nine months ago.

"This is further proof that the college's vision of training future leaders for tomorrow is a clear reality," said Mike Farris, president of the college. "Our students are already making a difference." PHC faculty and staff are working hard every day training more students who will soon be following in the footsteps of pioneers like Rebekah.

Upon graduating from Patrick Henry last May, Rebekah applied for a White House internship. Not only was she accepted into the internship program, she was also assigned a position in the Office of the Senior Advisor to the President, Karl Rove.

She describes her first day as "insane." Fifteen minutes into her new job, her boss left for a meeting with instructions that Rebekah could interrupt only if the president called. That first day she was briefed on an incredible amount of information.

And with a job like that who could escape highlights? In her third week of work she took a call from the Oval Office. President Bush's secretary called for Mr. Rove, and before McDonald could get Mr. Rove on the line, Bush's secretary patched the president through. "After he hung up I turned to the guy next to me and said, 'Henry, I just talked to the President of the United States!' I started shaking, I was so shocked."

The internship led to her new permanent position within the Administration.

Patrick Henry College is very proud of Rebekah and the other pioneers from her class.

There's nothing preventing an ambitious gal from being a Godly wife and mother after doing God's bidding elsewhere in the world. Everything in its time, and according to His will. The evidence that it is God's will that some women should thus proceed is manifestly evident in the fruit borne of their collective enterprises. 'sall good.

I know two young ladies, spiritually, physically and mentally strong....cousins....homeschoolers....Christians. One, my own, is a Merchant Marine officer , her cousin, a missionary teaching English and Math to poor South American children. Both have ambitions, also, of being wives, mothers, and homeschooling parents. They are light-bringers on their appointed missions, acting in His name and in accord with His instructions. The Holy Spirit does not ask permission to act; nor is it constrained by interpretations of men..and women...regarding the meaning its own proclamations.

I do not think ye shall see Miss McDonald's progeny in a daycare.

Grandma....you did what???!!!????

You're goofy, and a fine example of why there are 35 year old men who never married, and are still living at home with mommy.

Ping!

As always, if you want on or off my homeschool ping list, please let me know via freepmail.

If you want on, it's not a very active list and you won't be pinged all the time.

If you want off, I'll cheerfully remove you.

you're being sarcastic right

Why do you have to be rude? How does saying I would be "ambivalent" and "concerned" about a daughter or son who was a single young professional make me an extremist, or "goofy"?

And if there's a connection between thinking young people in their 20's should be married instead of screwing around, with middle-aged men living with their parents, I've certainly missed it.

It would be so agreeable if people could address what one actually said, instead of just being ugly.

This woman is a college graduate and was able to obtain one hell of a post graduate internship. One can assume that she's quite responsible and intelligent i.e. SHE'S A GROWNUP WHO CAN TAKE CARE OF HERSELF. Don't worry about her.

Save ur fears for those in govt who think YOU are unable to care for yourself and therefore need to be controlled

It's nice to see the President's arm around an intern and know that it is a perfectly wholesome circumstance! Praise God for President Bush!

I understand what you're saying and I don't think I'm being unfair or creating a crude caricature of that to say that that's a Bubble view of the world. Just because it's a city? These are college-age kids after all. Soon they're going to be out alone in the big wild, wide world. I think it *is* a dangerous bubble-ish view of the world to say even at that age, even when working at the Bush White House, it's all too dangerous. Kids can't be sheltered *that* much at that age -- they have to be making the right choices on their own very soon.

I see what you're saying and I just still feel, with cheerful regret, that that's an entirely different planet with a different weather system than mine.

Well, so be it. We disagree. I'm sure this young McDonald will acquit herself just fine.

I think you are probably right, and I never said she SHOULD be sheltered, or prevented from making her own decisions at her age. She might even be living at home, for all I know.

I'm just concerned about the future for my children, and projecting useless anxiety onto this young lady's situation. Thanks for being civil!

OK. I understand. I disagree. I guess I should add that the fact that I live in DC and know many people who do so and whom I think you'd find quite nice and safe. It's all a question of the neigborhood. There are some good places in Virginia to commute to DC from, also.

Very likely you're right. Sometimes out here on the Moon we get an erroneous view of how other people live :-). I blame the liberal media!

But aside from that, I'd be quite ambivalent if this were my pretty young daughter. I doubt the majority of the young male staffers share the values of Patrick Henry College. I wonder where she's living?

Well, if my handsome son is ever placed in such an environment, he will have been prepared to know about proper behavior.

That's what is alluded, isn't it? That the kids, out of parental restrictions will begin to rut like animals?

Some will. As I have said before, the HS'ers are the last hope for reclaiming the Republic.

This news is good. And the Eeyore response is per usual.

Post it!

Oh may I???

My 15 year old homeschooled son was just accepted at the local Classical Christian school. We were told they want kids like mine in their school. The principal looked at his reading list and asked, "You . . .read . . .all . . .these?" And the answer is YES!

Oh! and he is well behaved, responsible, self-assured in every situation he is in, a black belt in jujitsu, green belt in karate, completed all levels in swimming, plays level 4 (i.e. Chopin Polonnaise, etc.)in Piano (took 1st at the local Musicfest); and his 13 year old brother is right on his heels!!

I've been dying to brag, we are so proud! and I may, because it is all by the Grace of God.
