The "victory-lap" dentist should have gotten a lot stiffer sentence, too.

Her crime was not even eligible for upgrade as a hate crime. I thought I made that clear.

Even if she hated this man, and even she wanted to send a message to all whities not to be out on the streets at night, it wouldn't have made any difference. She was prosecuted for all she could possibly be prosecuted for, whether hate crime legislation existed or not.

She left him to die.

She didn't just leave him to die, she hid him so no one else could help him, and she came again and again into the garage to check and see if he was dead yet. She kept him hidden to ensure he died. That's murder. I wish they'd give her the chair, followed by the firing squad, followed by hanging, followed by the guillotine.

I agree her remorse came with arrest and the dawning of the really big trouble she was in.Depraved indifference and criminally negligent selfishishness come to mind.

Well what it boils down to is this. This man's life was less important to this woman than her desire to hide her condition while driving. Teddy, are you listening?

Doughty, you is done went and pronounced a verity.

IMHO, what Submarine Commander Theodore M Kennedy did is in principal precisely the same as what this lady did.

She gets 60 years; he walks.

Main differences:

1. Her name isn't Kennedy.

2. He wasn't subject to Texas justice.

drugs and accidental pedestrian "accident" aside...

she let him bleed out in her garage after he pleaded with her. she decided to make him die. wanton disregard is 2nd at least, and premeditated (call 911, nurse) is 1st degree in my book. then we take mitigaing factors into consideration.

in my book, there isn't a pit deep enough.

thanks for your reply.

She did not walk up to the guy and shoot him in the head

No, she walked away and let him die. What's the difference, other than he suffered alot longer than if he'd been hit by a bullet?

Was Mary Jo cremated? Most Catholics back then forebade cremation.

60 years is a life sentence. She did not walk up to the guy and shoot him in the head.

Not in the accident. But in the aftermath, that is essentially what she did -- she deliberately with knowledge caused him to die just as assuredly as if she had shot him point blank in the head.

If she had she would have gotten the same sentence. Different crime, different sentence.

You mix up a potential manslaughter charge for the accident (although the fellow was not killed by the accident. If she had called the paramedics he wouldn't have died.

People doing much worse have gottten much less.

That's not an argument.

Keep in mind, that this jury was basically balanced, both by race and by sex. There were 8 men and 6 women (I think) and 2 of those were alternates (I don't know exactly the make up of the seated jury). If I remember right, there were something like 8 black and 6 non-black (white/hispanic)(I don't know exactly the make up of the seated jury).

She did not deserve a life sentence.

She didn't get a life sentence.

She hid the body, thus seeling his fate. Hitting him was a accident. Letting him die was not.

Kennedy has been a disgrace to himself, his family and our nation for about as long as I can remember. I'll never forget the look of that neck brace he wore for a period of time.

A life sentence would have been 99 years with eligibility for parole after 49.5 years.

I believe she's 27 so she'll become eligible for parole when she's 52 under the sentence imposed on her.

Not exactly life.

Thanks/ping. I'd like to know what made her into a person who would leave a man dying in her garage. Astounding.

60 years, possibly out in 30, which puts her past the age of reproduction since she's presently twenty-seven.

Good job by a good jury.

She said she thought she hit a big bug. Man, that`s almost as wasted as a Kennedy. Too bad she wasn`t a Senator and a Kennedy, she would have gotten ummmm...Oh that`s right, no time, no nothing, but repeated re-elections to office and more chances to get wasted and walk around with no pants on.
