Introduction to the VENONA Project
An Effort to Digitize and Enhance the VENONA Documents
by Mr. William P. Crowell, Former Deputy Director, National Security Agency

In July 1995 the Intelligence Community ended a 50-year silence regarding one of cryptology's most splendid successes - the VENONA Project. VENONA was the codename used for the U.S. Signals Intelligence effort to collect and decrypt the text of Soviet KGB and GRU messages from the 1940's. These messages provided extraordinary insight into Soviet attempts to infiltrate the highest levels of the United States Goverment.
Today, we are proud to offer these exceptional documents on the NSA home page and we invite you to study and interpret them in the context of history. NSA has declassified over 3000 messages related to VENONA. We believe they will not only provide a window into Soviet espionage during the 1940's, but will also give you a glimpse of the important contributions signals intelligence and cryptographic expertise make to our nation's security.

National Security Agency ^ | 11 July 1995 | Mr. William P. Crowell
Remembrances of VENONA ---------------------------------------- National Cryptologic Museum NSA Home Page Note: The following are the remarks made by Mr. William P. Crowell, Deputy Director of NSA when the declassification of the VENONA project was announced at CIA Headquarters on 11 July 1995. Mr. Crowell retired from NSA on 12 September 1997. In the early 1960's, shortly after joining NSA, I was one of a small but fortunate group of agency employees invited to a meeting with Frank Rowlett, one of the eminent NSA cryptologists who had been so successful during World War II. For over an hour Frank told us...

Insight on the News ^ | Vol. 13, No. 37 -- Oct. 6-13, 1997 | Stephen Goode, 1st article; Tiffany Danitz, 2nd
For education and discussion purposes only. We Told You So By Stephen Goode Since the fall of the Soviet Union, hard proof confirms that the Communist Party U.S.A. was active in espionage and clandestine activities. Liberals steadfastly claimed it wasn't true. What amazes me is that it is far worse than I thought," Hoover In-stitution research fellow Arnold Beichman tells Insight, emphasizing every word. Beichman, author of books such as Anti-American Myths: Their Causes and Consequences, is talking about the amount of espionage and clandestine activity carried out by American members of the Communist Party in the United States from...

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Soviet Cold War espionage has piqued the interest of many for decades. Yet, the unearthing of the Soviets' spy efforts had a simple beginning. In 19 45, a Soviet code clerk in Canada, Igor Gouzenko, defected and told Canadian and U.S. authorities of Soviet espionage in stealing the atomic bomb during World War II. Before Gouzenko was able to meet U.S. authorities, two Americans, Whittaker Chambers, a former editor of Time magazine, and Elizabeth Bentley, later dubbed the "blond spy queen," defected from the Communist Party USA and told the authorities they had acted ...

You probably mean Harry Dexter White, Department of the Treasury number 2 man, Communist spy, advisor to Henry Morganthau, and first chief of the International Monetary Fund. Another very likely candidate was David Niles, Truman advisor on Palestine and Jewish affairs. Niles had the unusual habit of cleaning his desk (i.e., destroying everything) at the close of every year.

No, he means Harry Hopkins.

One of the Venona books had a discussion on why Hopkins was probably a Soviet spy. The one reason is that Hopkins met the illegal rezident (the second Soviet spymaster who is in the US not as an embassy employee, but uncover just in case the embassy is every closed down) and no one other than Soviet spies are supposed to know who this is or meet with him.

I believe it was Harry Hopkins who was one of FDR's closest friends. I believe was in charge of FDR's Lend-Lease, that gave the Soviet's everything we had. He was quoted by the Soviet's as being "the most important of all." Hopkins: "Tax and tax, spend and spend, elect and elect, because people are too damn dumb to know the difference." Although, Harry White was right there with the rest of the 'rats.

Heck, I just got done reading some quotes from FDR's chief economic advisor (Rexford Tugwell) and the fact that these people were almost out in the open with some of their views is scary.

More likely both.

The ROSENBURG'S were identified based on these NSA Soviet decrypts .....but their prosecutor had problems enough OTHER evidence to convict them so the crypto would NOT be revealed!

This is great stuff!

I heard Ann Coulter talking about this on H&C last evening.

Reads like is is straight from a Clancy novel.

I've read a couple of the recent Venona books, at it is quite frightening to realize how deeply penentrated the US govt was, at its highest levels, at the height of the Cold War.

Those books, plus Chambers' Witness, are must-reads.

Harry Hopkins and Lauchin Currie were President Roosevelt's most trusted advisors and gate keepers, they both lived in the White House. They both were Russian spys substantiated by Venona files.
