The rules at Liberty are ridiculous. Their property, their school, their rules. I wouldn't be caught dead going there, but that's just me.

If he drank wine, maybe then he has a point...:)
But the kids at my school aren't drinking wine secretly. There aren't wine bottles out in teh parking lot, but beer cans.

Christian women should not dress to be sexually stimulating to the opposite sex. Obviously you've never been to a church on Sunday morning. Pick any one in your area, go there next Sunday, and look at how the women dress. It's a total turn-on for any red-blooded male.

Uh oh.
A friend of mine (a pastor's daughter, very conservative, white, btw...hardly some gang member) wore those last year sometimes. I guess she would get in trouble at Liberty. lol

Ok... If your girlfriend at Liberty U, who you just hold hands with, just learned that her relative passed away are you allowed to hug her? You are hugging her because you like her, and to console her, so there are mixed reasons here. It goes beyond hand holding, what if you kissed her forehead as tears were going down her cheeks? Oh... there has to be a rules enforcement court to settle this all.
Again, Jesus criticized people like Falwell. He is a pharisee. These rules are not about legalisms, not the spirit of the church.
No sex, no drugs, no booze, is quite acceptable and understandable at a bible college.
Going to a coffee shop, sipping herbal tea, until 2am to discuss the bible with a group of fellow students on a Friday night is a major infraction at his school.
Enough said...
To: AlaskaErik
I rarely do this such as the extremely conservative Christian that I am, but this college is truly run by modern day pharisees.
I don't remember the last time that I refered to something as being for pharisees.
Needless to say, this is rather incredible...

"That crap at Liberty is legalism. "Enforcing a code of conduct is creating an environment. It is not "legalism". Legalism is teaching that your salvation depends on adherence to rules. I can assure you Liberty does not teach legalism even if they do have a strict code of conduct.

not at mine luckily, but I am sure at many of the "non-denominational" churches you likely are right.
Non-denominational churches tend to well.....let's just say I don't like them.

True. The students choose to go there.
What I am concerned about is not the rules per se, but the legalism that comes through them.
You can't even visit the residence halls of the opposite sex...not even in the LOBBY. Come on!

"4)...Their time under strict regulation has led to rebellion, not maturity. 5) All of these students are well above the bar-mitzvah age where they would be considered responsible adults. "So they are of age to be responsible adults, yet they are rebelling? Sounds like they never grew up.
If they are adults and they are choosing where to go to school. And they choose Liberty in part because of the environment. Then they are not likely to be rebelling.
If they are "being sent" to liberty because they never grew up and their parents are trying to put them in a protective environment. Then that may very well lead to rebellion. But I saw an awful lot of rebellion at Louisiana State and there were no rules. So I don't think I would fault the parents, unless the continued immaturity was their fault.

What's even funnier is the fact the 99% of these posters have never stepped foot in Lynchburg, VA, talked to an LU student/grad, read about the school, or investigated anything regarding the school, and yet they are experts. The problem is they buy into the Jerry Falwell the press presents, and then anything associated with him is "wacked out" "out of the mainstream" "extremist".
.
I would agree that some of those rules are legalistic and dare say ridiculous in my opinion. Its not what I would necessarily do if I was setting up a college, but guess what, I didnt set up LU, and neither did anyone on this board. As many have said, its known upfront what the rules are, no one is required to attend. Some people want to go to a college where they are not bombarded with temptations/peer pressure day in and day out. Some people actually believe that sleeping around, getting drunk every weekend, cheating on test, and doing drugs is not what they want to do or is a part of their belief system (gasp). What wackos! </sarcasm> Unfortunately for the anti-Christian bigots on this site, LU will have about 10,000 kids this year, not to mention the hundreds of other Christian Colleges with thousands of students.
.
I did not go to LU (I went to a less legalistic college), but I have had family go to LU and have visited MANY times. What I can tell you is that Falwell's personality is so far removed from what the press tells you that its not even funny. He's a prankster, jokester, and very approachable. The kids at the school LOVE him. I will never forget seeing him "crowd surf" at a basketball game one time (even at his weight!). Whatever you think about the man, you have to admit that he has convictions and sticks by them. He calls a spade a spade...
.
One question: If all these rules make the kids "uncreative", how about your co-workers? What is the dress code at your work??? Is it so horrible that your boss makes you were clean, nice clothes? I see no difference in your argument. Are parochial school kids who wear uniforms less creative?
To: dogbyte12
Um...I'm not a Liberty and I am opposing their rules. Not sure why you wrote to me.
I have mocked the hand-holding only rule.
I even have done something un-precedented and invoked the name of the pharisees like you did.

What I am concerned about is not the rules per se, but the legalism that comes through them. Don't free people have the right to choose to live in and subject themselves to whichever "legalistic" environment they wish? I'll reiterate; my opinion is that many of the rules in that place should more correctly be referred to as the waste product from a chicken. However, if mommy and daddy want to foot the bill for junior to live under said rules, seems to me that is their call.

Any proof that Falwell wants to ban contraception, outlaw homosexual acts between consenting adults, etc? Any proof he wouldn't?
Sorry, he isn't trustworthy. His type never is, so his type can no longer be allowed political power.
You are joking right?
And just in case your not, What "type" are you talking about?
To: DannyTN
Disagree. While legalism is a works salvation, by having pharisee-like regulations that go beyond the basic needs of ensuring some basic Christian morality and trying to keep students sexually pure etc., they are unconsciously teaching that God doesn't love you if you sin and that people do not have the ability...even with the Holy Spirit...to control themselves. Instead, they need ridiculous restrictions to keep themselves in line.
I am a Calvinist, but quite frankly, it is heresy to limit the power of the Holy Spirit like that. In a Christian environment, the members keep eachother accountable and that is a POWERFUL enforcer in itself. A Christian college is a community of believers and that is powerful. They should not need an excessive number of rules from the top, just enough to ensure the community can work together effectively at keeping eachother accountable.

Yes, and other free people have the right to mock them.
