Adding fuel to the speculative political fires, Rep. Jim Gibbons (R) began his 2004 cycle fundraising efforts Wednesday with a special guest of honor at a Capitol Hill luncheon: National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman George Allen (Va.).

As of now it appears increasingly likely that Gibbons will make the jump. I'm expecting him to narrow Reid's support in Washoe County (where he is suprisingly strong for a democrat). Overcoming Las Vegas will be a problem, but there is also a variable that has suprisingly recieved little mention: the increasing immigration of residents of California in to low tax Nevada. The state is becomeing increasing republican, while the reverse is true in California, mainly because many GOP voters have fled to Idaho, Colorado, and Nevada.

If only that were true...unfortunately, the state is no longer becoming "increasingly Republican" due to the vast amount of hispanic immigration that is now fast outpacing the immigration from non-hispanic Californians. Reid has strong hispanic support (With help from the unions...Hard to believe he actually co-sponsored legislation significantly reducing immigration less than ten years ago)

The other problems Gibbons will have involve the G.O.P. base. Although he is a conservative, he is also moderately pro-choice and will unfortunately lose single issue pro-life voters to the allegedly pro-life Reid; Further, about 10 percent of the vote will be L.D.S. (Mormon) and Reid, who is L.D.S. himself, will likely still peel a substantial portion of that vote away from the G.O.P. as he has in past elections.

All of that, combined with the union money and voter fraud, and Gibbons has an uphill (though not impossible) task.

this hard core pro-lifer would vote for Gibbons over Reid in a second. It's clear that Reid wouldn't allow a conservative to get CLOSE to the Supreme Court. Gibbons I'm sure, would vote "Aye" on all W appointments.

Freepers, rather than waiting to see what happens with Estrada, we need to take the lead. That means presuring Senators, special interest groups, media organizations, etc. This thread is meant to be an ongoing effort to get this man confirmed. For too many years liberals have had their way on the courts. Now, President Bush is in a position to move the courts to the right. The election of '02 showed that the country is with the President. I think it's time to let Daschle, Hillary, and Pelosi know this is Bush country. Are you with me! Let's FREEP these people.

Gibbons is not so pro-abort I would discount entirely supporting him (unlike, say, Greenwood of PA). Reid barely won in a good 'Rat year, and Gibbons represented the equivalent of about 2 Congressional districts, so I'd say he starts out about even.

Voter registration in 2000 showed the Dems leading by a very slim 363K to 359K. Link

Registration in 2002 showed the GOP up by almost 8K (363K to 355K).

I'd say Nevada is trending Pubbie, albeit slowly. And since 2002 the Dems have outregistered the Pubbies ever so slightly, though the GOP still has a 7K+ advantage. Link

You've got that right. Gibbons not only voted for the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban, he also voted AGAINST Jim Greenwood's sham substitute amendment that would have allowed abortions so long as the mother's "health" (including "mental health") was endangered. So when the chips were down, Gibbons voted the right way. The supposedly pro-life Reid, on the other hand, voted FOR a similar amendment by Richard Durbin before covering his posterior and voting for the PBA ban (here's a list of how they voted: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/863742/posts?page=214#214). So as a pro-life voter, I'd much rather support Gibbons than Reid, even without taking into account the fact that Gibbons will support Bush's judicial nominees and Reid will not do so.

Thank you for proving my point Coop. Larlaw, those statistics further illustrated my earlier point that Nevada is indeed trending republican.

As to hispanic immigration, it further illustrates why we need to continue our minority outreach program. It took a long time for the democrats to put blacks in their camp and for us to put southern whites in our camp. It will take time, but it's worth the effort.

Interesting statistics which I was unaware of. Current voter registration is only part of the story, however. It is my understanding that G.O.P and Democratic registration numbers have shifted back and forth for about ten years now. Keep in mind, however, that a disproporionate amount of the new G.O.P. voters are retirees, and also keep in mind that the Clark County School District is now close to 30% hispanic. While many of the current immigrants here are illegal or not citizens, their children definitely are.

I agree that we are going to have to get more hispanics to vote G.O.P. and do more voter outreach (Though my preference is to actually control the borders, enforce our nation's laws, and deport people who are here illegally); However as long as we continue to allow unlimited immmigration of unskilled workers (i.e. tax consumers rather than taxpayers) the G.O.P. will always be at a disadvantage, and the sheer numbers are enough to tip closely balanced Nevada into the Dem column into the forseeable future. (Just take a look at the voter registration numbers in California in the 1990s...I don't think we are that far behind.)

I don't get Reid's postition. He's against it but sometimes votes for it?

Fortunately, it is the "decent people fleeing from Cali" (like myself over ten years ago) who helped bring the G.O.P. parity to the Dems in the 1990s. However, California's demographics are rapidly changing for the worse, as will Nevada's (albeit more slowly).
