Reducing Medicaid would be fine, but there's no rain to fill reservoirs. Lake Powell and Lake Mead are both about half-empty.

I will rail with you against what has happened to forests across the country any day. But as someone who lived in New Mexico for 25 years, I am afraid this does not fall into that category.

The Bosque is areas of dense brush, dogwoods, and more recently (well relatively speaking 100 yrs?) Salt Cedars. This is more akin to grass fires in Australia, or the Brush fires in the mountains around L.A.

This kind of growth will be back next year in the same density. The fire was literally in the city, hence the commotion. These fires are very, very common in New Mexico. I remember seeing 3 or 4 of the black plumes suddenly erupt a year in Las Cruces far into my youth and less frequently in the more developed area of New Mexico's largest city Albuquerque in my college years.

Now head north and west a little from Albuquerque, towards Los Alamos and you will find land destroyed by Forest Service Fire and Logging policy mis-management. A shame that is. You can actually drive a great road from Los Alamos to Cuba NM and pass through National Forest Service, BLM, Indian, and Private Forest and see the effects of the different management policies. From Now Barren scorched Federal Land, to healthier forest of the BLM and Indian Lands.

For example, the President's Prairie Chapel Ranch is located on the Middle Fork of the Bosque River.

It looks like they've got the fire whipped but not before it jumped from the west side of the river where it was first controlled to the east side. Only 600 acres burned so it was a large fire to occur within a city, but a small fire as compared to most Western States fires. I was down by Coors and Montano when the fire broke out. It was a mess. The smoke got so bad they closed I-40 both ways for about 2 hours.

A few years ago, the US Forest Service decided they wanted to reclaim an ancient meadow, so they sent out some workers to set an extremely hot fire. In New Mexico, in the dry spring, on a windy day. The fire ended up consuming over 450 homes in Los Alamos, along with beautiful forests from where the fire was set to the Santa Clara Indian reservation, where it was finally contained.

The point being, some of our government agencies are run by extremists that do not allow for proper maintenance. But the other agencies, such as were mentioned, do better jobs at balancing preservation needs with fire protection. The drive he mentioned is one of the most beautiful in NM. And you can tell the difference in the forests as you pass into different jurisdictions.
