Large bosque fire going in Albuquerque
Author-published | June 24, 2003 | Muleteam1

Posted on 06/24/2003 4:43:07 PM PDT by Muleteam1

A very large fire is now burning in the river bosque in Northwest Albuquerque. It was discovered about 3:45 pm this afternon and fire crews are now on the scene. The fire is moving north from the area of I-40 and Coors. Callers to KKOB (770 AM radio) have reported structures are on fire and a large number of customers lost electrical power for a period. The Governor is now on his way back from Mexico City where he just met with Mexican President Fox. State resources are standing by and U.S. Forest Service has dispatched a helicopter.

En realidad la palabra "bosque" es el español palabra por el inglés palabra "forest."

But forests are so rare in NM that they are only along the rivers or in the mountains. ;-)

I don't suppose there has been any lightening to account for how it started?

No lightening for sure. It's been cloudless all day today until we started getting the smoke from the fire.

(ala route 66 cafe in Santa Rosa, home of James 'Bozo' cordova).

Ah yes. I know very well where that is. There is also a Bozo's Garage in Santa Rosa that I'm betting belongs to Mr. Cordova?

YOu might want to get the phone number of a FReeper you trust so if you have to evacuate you can let your friends know you're okay? I will have you and the rest of your city in my prayers. I lived there in the heights when I was a child, and it's the most beautiful place.

Evacuees were told to gather at the Home Depot

To buy rebuilding supplies, I presume?

my home is only a few miles north of the fire.

Uh, which way is the wind blowing? Put all your important things in the car, if you haven't already. Be ready to move out in a moment's notice.

Best of luck to you and your neighbors. Check in here often and let us know you're okay.

As you probably remember, these bosque fires usually stay along the river where there is sufficient vegetative fuel. However, these days with the postage-stamp sized home lots, a fire could easily start house jumping if assisted by a good dry breeze, which we have today.

I live in in the Taylor Ranch area of the west side so we are north of the fire. Thank you, all other FReepers, for your prayers.

Well, this is wierd. As you can tell from my screen name, I live nowhere close to Albuquerque. And yet, a week ago, for the first time in my life, I went hiking at that very bosque. Lots of underbrush. This isn't going to be easy to put out. Latest word is that it has already jumped the river.
