Lardner's line is a great one, though I can claim no credit even for discovering it, much less originating it. I first came across it in a column by George Will, years ago; I don't remember what the column was about, but he repeated (and, of course, attributed) the line, and it has stayed with me.
" 'Shut up,' he explained" says more in four words than many authors could have conveyed in a hundred.

Thank God for the RocketsOh Yeah....Hakeem could be a poster child for immigration. The absolutely best center of his time, top five of all time. I grew up in Houston and lived through all those sad events. I skipped work to watch the greatest game ever played. Glad to see Rice win, home of James Baker.

"Mel Renfro".....It was actually Mike Renfro of the Oilers who had the T.D. stolen from him in the AFC Championship game against the Steelers. It cost the Oilers a trip to the Super Bowl.

I was at that 14 inning masterpiece that we lost to the Mets. My med school semester finals were the next day. We were all too despondent to fear the exams after that heartbreaker. It was a one two punch that I will not forget.

Thanks for the correction, it darn sure was MIKE Renfro. He grow up in Dallas, went to TCU, and later played for the Cowboys, but it is his catch in the right corner of Three River's endzone that immortalized him in Columbia Blue.
BTW, how could I forgot to mention the dadgum greatest comback in NFL history, that horrid day in Buffalo?
