Sad. Very very sad.
I'm sure O'Connor is the culprit.

This shows how important the judicial branch really is. This is why we MUST fight for all of Bush's judges.

I even have liberal friends who think that U of M is too far. Hearing that you get 20 points for being black or hispanic(but not asian or jewish), 12 points for a 1600 SAT score even offends some liberals sensibilities.
I don't see how this court bought this. O'Connor and or Kennedy I guess.
This is very bad for everybody. For a black student with spectacular LSAT's and SAT's they look suspect. For a white, asian, or jewish kid, they are screwed. For minority kids who are intelligent, but aren't ready for U of M, but do have the potential to succeed if they get back to basics at a less rigorous school, they will be more likely to drop out and fail.
Who wins... nobody.

From the Associated Press:
Court Upholds Mich. Affirmative Action
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a university law school admissions policy that gives minorities an edge, ruling that race can be one of many factors that colleges consider when selecting their students.
The ruling in the law-school case preserves the concept of affirmative action for minorities who might otherwise be underrepresented on top campuses, but makes clear that racial preferences must be used sparingly.
The 5-4 ruling endorsed a program at the University of Michigan law school meant to ensure a "critical mass" of minorities on campus. The program is not an illegal quota, the high court said.
A companion ruling testing the constitutionality of another, more overtly preferential affirmative action program for minority applicants was also expected Monday.

Good grief, takes with one hand and gives with the other. This is so absurd--a ruling to confuse and increase litigation. I'd be happier if it had gone all the way to undergrad--at least there'd be more than smoke to fight...

Anybody know the differences between the two policies? The 20 points for being a minority from what I have just heard was only part of the undergrad program. Are there any other differences between the two policies that would suggest the split vote?
