Democrats threaten to filibuster nominee

Democrats strenuously oppose the nomination of California Judge Carolyn B. Kuhl, suggesting she may become the third Bush nominee filibustered in the Senate.

In a letter to the Judiciary Committee chairman, Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, California Democrats, urged "that no further action be taken on the nominee."

She'll be filibustered like crazy. There are way too many factions in opposition, such as:

  Heck, who needs judges anyway? Why not just let these "organizations" decide any case that comes before the court? They're already running (ruining) the country; may as well take over the judiciary.

Frist should have ended the filibustering or at least crammed it down the Dems throats months ago when they first started with Estrada.

Now, filibustering is an albatross that Frist is having to wear. 2 ongoing filibusters, now Kuhl threatened. Pickering, if nominated. Any of possibly 3 SC judicial noms that don't get Dem approval.

WEAR THE ALBATROSS WELL FRIST. You deserve it for your lack of leadership back the first week of the Estrada filibuster. You didn't act then, and now you have only have as much "leadership" as the DEMOCRATS allow you to have.

Frist is a pussy who is afraid to call the Dem's bluff. If now is not the time to spend some political capital, when??? A real leader would bring this situation to a head and fight the good fight. Screw the Senate republicans. THEY are the worst thing we have to fear now.

Agreed. The Republicans have the power to stop this, but they just keep rolling over and taking it up the arse. Makes me extremely concerned with Supreme Court nominations coming.

If the GOP can't parley this and the Democrats' other perfidies into a 60-vote majority in the Senate come 2004, it has no further claim on anyone's respect.

By all means, let's give 'em the chance. Let's make a 60-vote Republican Senate contingent the top priority for November 2004. But if we can achieve that, let's have no more patience with Republicans' lack of performance. They've been talking for quite a while about their commitment to limited, Constitutional government. It will be time to deliver.

• Abolish the Department of Education.
• Abolish the Department of Energy.
• Repeal Volkmer-McClure and all other Acts of Congress that infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.
• Abolish the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
• De-fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

That should do for a start. We can get into the more contentious issues among conservatives after those steps, which just about all conservatives agree on, have been completed.

Oh, and please don't trot out the "just make 'em do a real 24/7 filibuster" line. That's been discussed to death and is not feasible.

How do they stop it?

I forget where it was posted, but the Republicans have a legitimate and legal way to stop the filibusters by forcing a vote. There's a thread somewhere about it. Orin Hatch has been threatening to do it, yet it hasn't happened. Hatch even turned up on Hannity and explained their plan, yet, it hasn't come to fruition. So, what and the heck are they waiting for?

Here's a link to their 'strategy'. And it may have been Specter, not Hatch who called into Hannity. I can't remember, but I'm sure other freepers heard the call.

I don't know what controls the timing on that particular resolution plan, unless they're giving their attorneys more time to review precedents and potential impact. Or the GOP may simply feel they're benefitting and the Dems are paying a price for the multilple filibusters.

Well I hope it happens soon. The Dems need a good kick in the pants- but the Republicans have to grow the big-a$$ boot to do it first.

Freepers, rather than waiting to see what happens with Estrada, we need to take the lead. That means presuring Senators, special interest groups, media organizations, etc. This thread is meant to be an ongoing effort to get this man confirmed. For too many years liberals have had their way on the courts. Now, President Bush is in a position to move the courts to the right. The election of '02 showed that the country is with the President. I think it's time to let Daschle, Hillary, and Pelosi know this is Bush country. Are you with me! Let's FREEP these people.
