I was in B&N today and all the copies of the book were 30% off. I didn't see any gaps in the shelves, either. Of course, we don't suffer fools down here. She shouldn't expect a whole lot of sellin' goin' on around here. As a matter of fact, I think I saw some people spitting on them as they walked by on their way to grab "Treason".

I'm not in the publishing business but what would be the break even point in sales to recover the 8 million in advance?

I wish Drudge would not post so many pictures of the Beast on his website. It's not even safe to go there anymore, lest I be bomarded with images of that huge, greedy mouth and those bug eyes. What's he trying to do, drive away his loyal readers?

As a Viacom stockholder, I'm happy to see those numbers.

I'm not buying the book, though.

I'm guessing S & S will need to clear about $10m-$11m to end up with zero. For not only do they have the cost of the $8m advance, but also the cost of editing, printing, binding, shipping, etc. etc.

I think at this point behind closed doors at S & S they're saying: "Well, let's work it so we don't lose too much."

"I was in B&N today and all the copies of the book were 30% off."

To be fair, all best sellers are 30% off at B&N. The 30% discount has nothing to do with sales (or the lack thereof).

Well, estimate "on the order of" $10/copy profit after printing, distribution, ghost-writer salary, etc. (It's not $1, and it's not $100).

So that would mean "on the order of" 800,000 copies break even....but certainly more than 80,000 copies and much less than 8,000,000 copies.

Even with powers of ten uncertainty, it seems like this book is not going to be a colossal failure economically, even if it is a tome of lies.

I had the MASSIVE PR campaign that she'd had, I could sell a million copies of "How Worms Reproduce"...or anything else for that matter!

The book is not selling in the Texas Panhandle.

I heard 1.2 million copies.

Well lets see the publisher probably didn't print that many yet, and re-oreders would depend upon projected sales. I don't know what the curve looks like for first edition hard covers but if the sales drop off is severe in the next couple of weeks we can assume that the hard core aparatchiks have finished their buying.

Harry Potter will wipe her out thank goodness, at least tone down some of the hype. I betcha she bought most of them anyway. (DNC)

I was at a Books-a-Million in Charleston, SC about a week-and-a-half ago and they weren't selling too well there, either.

Indubitably, the balance will be picked up by Purina Chow, shredded and mixed with their nutriant cattle cake mix. In that fashion on can also make a mint in cattle futures. Isn't that how she balanced books for a profit in the past?

Break even point

Break even point would be about 1.2 million copies.

For the publisher to make as much on the book as they paid Hillary would take sales of about 2.4 million copies.

The typical writers royalty on a book is $4 per book.

The book wholesales for $14 each.
