"Thank GOD it's...W"
Even the ultra-lefties understood our sign better than the dingbats from the Associated Press...

Note how THEY garbled the words from our sign in THIS report, from www.dailynews.com:

Bush raises $5 million in quick visit to state
By Jennifer Loven
Associated Press
President George W. Bush passed through four cities, delivered two speeches and spent eight hours airborne in a marathon day in which he was greeted by hundreds of West Coast protesters but also enough well-heeled Republicans to add $5 million to his campaign coffers.

Bush's two California stops Friday -- at a luncheon outside San Francisco and a dinner in Los Angeles -- were part of an efficient and lucrative two-week dash. The effort will allow the president's re-election campaign to file federal finance reports showing $27 million to $30 million for the three-month period ending Monday.

The amount is certain to dwarf the totals of the nine Democratic presidential contenders -- even though Bush started months after his rivals.

The lunch brought in $1.6 million. The glitzier evening event added another $3.5 million to the day's take, said campaign spokeswoman Nicolle Devenish.

But the president clearly had more on his mind than his re-election account. Eager to start a weekend stay at his Texas ranch, Bush opted out of an overnight in California, which he lost to Al Gore by 12 percentage points in 2000. Instead, he chose a schedule in which he flew from Washington to San Francisco to Los Angeles and halfway back across the country to arrive in Crawford, Texas, well after midnight.

Looking toward his final destination, Bush told his lunchtime supporters he couldn't wait to see his wife. But, he quipped, "She'll be the lump in the bed next to me since I get in at 1:30 in the morning."

He also rushed through the VIP reception before his speech -- a private picture-taking session with those who raised $50,000. Then, onstage, he impatiently signaled for California finance chairman and close pal Brad Freeman to wrap up his introductory remarks. Bush left San Francisco a full 45 minutes ahead of schedule.

Donors who gathered in the airport hotel ballroom paid $2,000 to eat grilled chicken salad with a strawberry and mango relish, wild mushroom ragout and a triple chocolate mousse.

They were also served pre-speech jokes by comedian Dennis Miller, who later earned a ride not only on Air Force One but also in the president's limousine. His well-received assessment of the Democratic White House hopefuls: "I haven't seen a starting nine like that since the '62 Mets," -- a reference to the New York baseball team that won 40 games and lost 120.

From Bush, the audience got a well-rehearsed, 25-minute summary of administration achievements and campaign promises.

"We have a lot on the agenda and what I want to tell you is that I'm going to continue to earn the confidence of all Americans, regardless of their political party, by keeping this nation secure and strong and prosperous and free," Bush said. "We have accomplished a lot, but our work is only the beginning."

The routine -- from the ticket price to the jokes to chicken on the menu to Bush's speech -- was largely repeated in Los Angeles. Guests there were treated to Johnny Mathis singing "The Star-Spangled Banner." But despite the $2,000 entry fee, donors had to go to the cash bar for cocktails.

"You're laying the groundwork for what will be a great national victory in 2004," Bush told them.

But traveling in this traditional Democratic stronghold had Bush sharing the spotlight with his opponents.

Outside the San Francisco hotel, about 1,000 protesters lined up behind barricades and a row of police in riot gear. They held signs proclaiming mostly anti-war messages; "Bush lies: Iraqi people & GIs die," read one.

An energized and seemingly even larger crowd gathered across from the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles as Bush wooed donors inside. Their chants and songs could be heard by fund-raiser guests as they made their way through the hotel, but not in the ballroom below.

Many protesters called for Bush's impeachment for what they called his misleading the nation into a war with Iraq.

"I think everything the president is doing is unbelievably ignorant. It's scary," said Elizabeth Elliott of Laguna Hills. "Ever since he's been in office the world has gone upside down."

Douglas Reed of Venice was among many in the crowd who said their opposition to Bush was fueled over the war. But ever since the bombing in Iraq began, Reed said, he avoided any rallies until now.

"I went into a depression," he said. "But today with the president coming in I thought I would start up where I left off. This is a bad time for the peace movement to slow down."

Not everyone in the crowd came to rally against the president. A few held banners praising him, and argued with protesters chanting, "Communists go home" and "God is for Bush."

"I'm here to support the president, support his actions and stand up to the groups that are here," said Deborah Leigh of North Hollywood. "It's a wonderfully empowering feeling to be able to come here and do that."

Staff Writer Ryan Oliver contributed to this report.

Some 2,000 protesters stage rally outside hotel where Bush speaks
LOS ANGELES

About 2,000 noisy but peaceful demonstrators, some in favor but most against, rallied outside the Century Plaza hotel where President Bush was making a fund-raising speech Friday.

Such diverse groups as Refuse & Resist, the Young Republicans, the Peace and Freedom Party, the Green Party and the Vietnamese Republican Assembly joined a rally that had no central themes, but generally was opposed to the president and his policies.

The colorful crowd, banging on drums, chanting and most holding signs saw several people in tie-dyed outfits standing beside others dressed as Miss Liberty and still others wearing Bush masks. They stood across the street from the Century Plaza hotel and at the corners of adjacent side streets.

A handful of pro Bush supporters were also on hand, and the two groups talked peacefully.

Ethlie Ann Vare, 43, a writer from Hollywood, took part with her 22-year-old son, Russell.

"I want to make sure our government isn't deceived into thinking everyone agrees with them," she said of the Bush administration. "We need as many bodies as possible here. He doesn't have a mandate."

Jennifer Kerns, 30, an Internet marketing executive and vice president of the Young Republicans, said "the majority does not come out to these events."

I totally respect their right to protest but for most of them this is their job," she said. "I had to take time off from work."

...Saturday's 'Calendar' Section of the Los Angeles Times ran a great photo, on Page B-12, of 2 Blond Lady Pro-BUSH Demonstrators working our little corner of the World last night.

...We corner Freepers were busy blocking a STOP BUSH sign with our American Flags so that Los Angeles Times Photographer JEAN CHUNG couldn't get the kind of clean shot she so desperately wanted of it.

...JEAN CHUNG stayed nearly a half hour in front of our Pro-BUSH Corner trying to get the photo she came to get of something Anti-BUSH.

...Instead JEAN CHUNG was forced to get a great shot of our American Flags of FREEDOM blocking that STOP BUSH Sign, while also picturing our Pro-BUSH signs lovingly saying:

"L.A. Loves DUBYA"

"BUSH - My Hero"

Great going, Freepers.

If she wanted something anti-Bush so desperately, why did she try to take a picture on your corner? All she had to do was take a picture of the protestors, right?

Hey y'all, my oldest girl saw the mess on tv and was worried. No coverage of us on KNBC at 11pm, just a nice shot of the crackpots. What the heck, we all lived through it, and hopefully President Bush knows that we appreciate him :)

Sorry I was rude and didn't say goodbye, Tony. We had to get through enemy territory to get to the car :(

RonDog: Don't forget to mention Carol. She rode with Jessamine and I. Jessamine, thanks again for the ride!

Our strategy of getting there EARLY worked, at least for the folks at the Sacramento Bee...
THEIR story was apparently written before about 6 pm, when there were only HUNDREDS of the A.N.S.W.E.R. RATs.
LATER, after 7:30 pm or so, there were over a thousand RATs, but most of the media were already GONE by then. :o)

Bush pushes campaign west

In an early sprint for 2004, the president raises GOP funds in the Bay Area and L.A.

By Herbert A. Sample -- Bee San Francisco Bureau
Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Saturday, June 28, 2003

BURLINGAME -- With nearly a thousand party loyalists arrayed before him, President Bush on Friday sought to energize his re-election campaign in California by praising the war on terrorism and collecting more than $1.6 million.

Bush started a 10-hour campaign trip to the state at a $2,000-a-plate luncheon here attended by 800 to 900 Republican Party activists at the Airport Marriott Hotel. Meanwhile, about 200 protesters chanted and waved signs across the street, held back by barricades and a sizable number of police.

After taking pictures with VIP supporters, delivering a well-received 20-minute speech and shaking hands, the president flew to Los Angeles, where he hosted another fund-raiser.

The two events added hefty amounts to an already-bulging campaign treasury that had previously collected more than $12 million. A tour in Florida on Monday is expected to push Bush's fund raising in the past three months to as much as $30 million. He officially launched his re-election effort in mid-May.

"I'm getting ready. I'm loosening up," the president told his audience after comedian Dennis Miller warmed up the crowd with a rash of sharp one-liners aimed at Democrats and liberals.

"And I'm going to need your help," Bush added, " ... not only financially, but also to pass our positive, inclusive message around the Bay Area."

During his address, Bush repeatedly focused on the war on terror and the need for domestic security, noting that regimes in Iraq and Afghanistan that defied American ultimatums no longer exist.

"Fifty million people in those two countries once lived under tyranny, and now they live in freedom," he said.

Several minutes later, he said "enemies of freedom" remain active, but the United States "will not rest, we will not tire and we will not stop until this threat to civilization is removed."

Bush also highlighted his economic program, contending that new laws on corporate behavior and large tax cuts on dividends and capital gains "are laying the foundation for greater prosperity and more jobs across America."

The president urged Congress to quickly grant final approval for a bill establishing a prescription drug program for seniors and declared that an explosion of "frivolous" medical lawsuits demands nationwide reform of medical liability laws.

Bush lost California to Democrat Al Gore in the 2000 election by 1.3 million votes. But GOP leaders said that while Bush must fight hard to win the state next year, he is in a much better position now, largely because of his actions since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"The big question that (voters) had in their mind was, was he up to an international crisis," said Duf Sundheim, chairman of the state Republican Party. "Once that issue was decided, which went well beyond just the 9/11 incident itself, people feel that he is up to the job."

An April Field Poll placed Bush's job approval rating at 61 percent. Party activists liken the degree of fondness they have for him to that for former President Reagan, said Sacramento developer Buzz Oates.

"I think he's very strong because of his record, what he's done," Oates said. "He's proven to the American people what he is, he's kept his word, and I think he and Reagan stand in the same category."

Out of eye-and earshot of the luncheon, hundreds of protesters waved signs and chanted anti-Bush slogans, intermingled with a few Bush supporters. "Bush lied, people died," one demonstrator yelled into a bullhorn. No arrests were reported.

Not long before Bush spoke, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, one of nine Democrats vying to face Bush next year, told reporters at the nearby San Francisco International Airport that Bush's "unfair and unaffordable" tax cuts are driving up the federal budget deficit.

"All over the country, America's economy is hurting, and Americans are losing jobs," said Kerry, who also announced the endorsement of state Controller Steve Westly. "Few regions are in more pain than Northern California."

The League of Conservation Voters, which hosted a Democratic presidential debate Thursday in Los Angeles, greeted Bush's arrival in Southern California with a 30-second advertisement airing on network television as Air Force One touched down in Los Angeles.

The ad assailed Bush for raising "millions from corporate polluters" while rolling back environmental protections -- a charge his administration has denied.

Several hundred protesters waited outside the Century Plaza Hotel where Bush spoke Friday night. A handful even got inside the hotel to unfurl a banner, saying: "Bush, you lied. You're fired."

Inside the ballroom, 1,800 supporters dined on chicken and contributed more than $3.5 million to the president's campaign. Brad Freeman, Bush campaign finance chairman, said that was a record for a Los Angeles political fund raiser.

"Frasier" star Kelsey Grammer appeared on the dais, and singer Johnny Mathis crooned the national anthem for the crowd.

Bush delivered a 22-minute speech that was virtually the same as the one he had given in Burlingame. Then he shook some hands and left.

"I would like to stay for dinner, but I am off to Crawford," he told the crowd.

He ended his 10-hour visit to the state on Air Force One enroute to his Texas ranch where, he said, his wife, Laura, awaited him.
