How Smart are You?
Emode Intelligence Testing ^ | 6/21/2003 | Self

Posted on 06/21/2003 10:58:27 PM PDT by Richard Kimball

This is a web site that claims to test your intelligence. I scored a 131, and was listed as a "word warrior!" How do you test out? The test is here!

BTW, I have no idea what intelligence testing means, other than what I've read in "Flowers for Algernon."

One of the ones I wasn't sure of was the following: In a race he runs 30 mph one way and 10 mph coming back. She runs 20 mph both ways. Who wins? I picked impossible to tell. I was thinking it would depend on the distance. But I think that was wrong. Does anyone know the answer?

The person traveling 20 mph both directions. The key is to understand that if each person is traveling the same distance the actual distance traveled is irrelevant in determining the answer. Just plug in any distance and calculate the answer. In my case, I used 120 miles as the distance. Person 1 goes there at 30 mph and returns at 10 mph, so the total time is 16 hours (4 going and 12 returning). Person 2 goes and returns at 20 mph for a total time of 12 hours.

That eMode site has some pretty nifty/fun 'tests'. Yes, i, too, came out to be a 'genius" just like everyone else on this site. Reminds me of a recent King of the Hill episode where Peggy took an online test that judged her to be a genius. Hank told her she was getting ripped off and being primed for a scan and that anybody who took that test would be labeled a genius. Yes, poor Luanne was chosen to be the guinea pig in the experiment, and when her score indicated 'genius', peggy had to admit that maybe the scores were rigged just a little. Not that i'm saying that we're NOT all geniuses! I'm just reminded of that King of the Hill episode. hahaha

I scored 135.....I took some psychologist administered tests as a senior in high school and scored nearly 150. I remember the guy telling me I would have qualified as genius 50 years earlier...lol...big help right?

I know IQ slips with age...the synapses just get a bit more elastic with time and whatnot.

But, experience and wisdom more than compensate...as does knowledge.

There are a lot of folks somewhat slower who are very successful because they have will, determination and character and maybe a bit of luck.

I always did ok on standardized tests...I was so lazy...that's all that got me in school.

Oh well, it's fun but it's sort of like just measuring horsepower on a car....so many other factors make up the whole package.

Regards

Same here. ...That's my story in a nutshell, in fact. My HS GPA was downright embarrassing (just a tad too much partying), but my SAT scores got me into UCLA.

There are a lot of folks somewhat slower who are very successful because they have will, determination and character and maybe a bit of luck.

No doubt. ...And conversely, a lot of "geniuses" who haven't done a damn thing with their lives.

Unfortunately, our society venerates pure intelligence and youth over character.

the test (as a pure IQ test) is faulty for at least three reasons: 1) It's not timed

This seems to me like a pretty big flaw in this test. After all, if the person who flies through it in five minutes and the person who struggles with it for an hour receive the same score, then how meaningful is that score? My Commodore 64 and my Pentium-powered IBM can both do some pretty impressive math, but I know that my IBM is smarter because it's faster.

136, and a "Facts Curator" similar, they say, to Bill Gates. Oh, well, at least I have the satisfaction of beating all the 135 people :)

The test is flawed because of the timing issue, but for what it's worth, my score on this test is within 3 points of a real IQ test I took in school.

I'm a "Facts Curator", with an extraordinary vocabulary and "exceptional math skills"(<===that alone tells me the test is flawed). I do seem to have accumulated a bunch of useless trivia over the years.

But I don't miss Berke Breathed

Oh, I do. When writing the strip he was a young man, and as the cliche goes, if you're not liberal when you're young you have no heart. He obviously had a head, as well, because he was an equal opportunity skewerer of pompousness, right or left. Basically I saw him as a libertarian at heart, and he just wasn't cynical enough to see the futility in that approach.

He quit cartooning a couple of years after a hang glider accident broke his back and nearly killed him. That's when he canned the daily and went to Sundays only. He did that for awhile and finally said "what for?" and went off to enjoy the money he'd made while he could still enjoy it. I gotta think that someone who could figure that much out has to have something on the ball. I was particularly fond of Opus (wasn't everyone) and Oliver:

Now, with a character like Oliver, he can't be all bad.

I got a 136 and was told I am a "Visual Mathematician."

I was also told that 60% of Visual Mathematicians wait for the other person to make the first move on a date.

Finally, I am getting the same email (telling me that 60% of ...) at a rate of once every ten minutes from these jokers.
