California is broke," said Steve Peace, director of Gov. Gray Davis' finance department. "This is the first time that we've been in a position where we actually have none of our own money. We are operating as of today totally on borrowed cash."

Wrong Mr. Pace it's not your money. It's no wonder California is broke. What a messed up state.

Our 99 Tahoe has a registration price tag of $165, due next month. Next year the same vehicle will cost us $495.

Davis needs to go. DUMP DAVIS.

"It's a horribly regressive and unnecessary tax," said Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, which plans to file a lawsuit challenging the fee hike. "It is a tax that hits low-and middle-income Californians the hardest."

Name one tax here in the People's Republik of Kalifornia that isn't regressive and unnecessary!

Kalifornia is broke all right... and nothing short of a revolution will fix the problems here.

"...raise the vehicle license fee for at least a year to ease a staggering budget deficit..."

oh yeah, like when was the last time taxes were raised "for a year"?? there's no such thing as a tax with an expiration date. And anyone who falls for that ploy is too stupid to vote.

I've been living here in CA for the last 30 yrs, and i've become increasingly disillusioned and discouraged with the deterioration in the quality of life here and the increasing tax burdens.

I've considered moving out of state (and have read the posts from other CA emigrants), but where? I like living near the ocean, and I like the abundant produce here. Oregon is worse than CA; WA is crazy nuts and too depressing weather. Where else to go? I've thought about Hawaii, but egads, they're a bastion of Democrat liberals...dunno...i just don't like what this formerly lovely state has become.

"The lines are plenty long already."

Yup. The very first thing to go is delivery of service to the public, while leaving everything else intact.

This is just GREAT! It's not enough that we have some of the toughest smog conditions to deal with, and us "low/middle income" people can't AFFORD a "new" car so those twice a year fees can really hurt sometimes. NOW this, plus insurance, plus high gas prices,
Already we have alot of drivers in this state that are driving without insurance or current tags, now it will be worse.

As far as I am concerned the cities are getting MORE than their fair share, to "bail" your car out of jail if it is towed for one of these offences costs. (in my city)
A $85.00 local tow fee, plus about $45.00-$60.00 a day storage. Last, but not least, a $75.00 "police release" which is just a slip of paper from the police station that shows that you are a licenced driver. You could get the same thing from the DMV for $5.00.

I went out and bought a couple of cars after the taxes dropped, cash.

The cost of owning those cars are maintenance, taxes and insurance.

Now the cost of owning those cars will be maintenance, taxes X 3, and insurance.

No one was talking about the small print four years ago in the car tax.

What would prevent the "x 3" from becoming an "x 10" or an "x 15" when Democrats go hog wild in the next Sacramento spending frenzy?? Nothing, as far as I know...

McClintock is the best choice for governor, with Arnold and Condi campaigning on his behalf.

"The law is the law is the law," Peace said, announcing the increase to a roomful of reporters from Los Angeles via speakerphone.

GD liars!

The law is the law except when if comes to millions of illegal aliens driving down the wages and choking off our entire GD system. Between California government, the the Federal Government, these assholes got to go.

"In other news, California's State Government has become the largest purchaser of SUVs."

I used to live there, so I feel sorry for you folks. Whatever you do don't just let it go unpaid. I had a small trailer that I bought for a move. The yearly fee was about $25. After I used it I put it away and forgot to pay the next year. I hadn't given the DMV my change of address for it so I didn't receive a bill. About five years later a friend wanted to buy it but I had to get the registration current to be able to sell. With the unpaid fees and penalties the price to get it current was over $800. For a $200 trailer. Ended up bringing it with me to Colorado, cost $11 to get square here.
