Declaring that California is running on fiscal fumes, state finance officials "pulled the trigger" Friday to raise the vehicle license fee for at least a year to ease a staggering budget deficit.

"California is broke," said Steve Peace, director of Gov. Gray Davis' finance department. "This is the first time that we've been in a position where we actually have none of our own money. We are operating as of today totally on borrowed cash."

Yes, obviously budgeting is an art yet to be learned there. All sarcasm aside, it's a cryin' shame the leftists have taken a state so rich in resources and beauty and plundered it into bankruptcy. HSM, maybe we can have a FReepathon for you, lol!

Check out Senator McClintock's site. I have been checking it out from time to time and the Senator appears to have a good handle on whats going on in CA and is very well spoken in his way of conveying his concerns for the state of CA and "Gray out".

He has my vote.

"It's a horribly regressive and unnecessary tax," said Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, which plans to file a lawsuit challenging the fee hike. "It is a tax that hits low-and middle-income Californians the hardest."

This is just GREAT! It's not enough that we have some of the toughest smog conditions to deal with, and us "low/middle income" people can't AFFORD a "new" car so those twice a year fees can really hurt sometimes. NOW this, plus insurance, plus high gas prices,
Already we have alot of drivers in this state that are driving without insurance or current tags, now it will be worse.

As far as I am concerned the cities are getting MORE than their fair share, to "bail" your car out of jail if it is towed for one of these offences costs. (in my city)
A $85.00 local tow fee, plus about $45.00-$60.00 a day storage. Last, but not least, a $75.00 "police release" which is just a slip of paper from the police station that shows that you are a licenced driver. You could get the same thing from the DMV for $5.00.

I went out and bought a couple of cars after the taxes dropped, cash.

The cost of owning those cars are maintenance, taxes and insurance.

Now the cost of owning those cars will be maintenance, taxes X 3, and insurance.

No one was talking about the small print four years ago in the car tax.

What would prevent the "x 3" from becoming an "x 10" or an "x 15" when Democrats go hog wild in the next Sacramento spending frenzy?? Nothing, as far as I know...

McClintock is the best choice for governor, with Arnold and Condi campaigning on his behalf.

"The law is the law is the law," Peace said, announcing the increase to a roomful of reporters from Los Angeles via speakerphone.

GD liars!

The law is the law except when if comes to millions of illegal aliens driving down the wages and choking off our entire GD system. Between California government, the the Federal Government, these assholes got to go.

These people have no concept of what it is to cut spending.

CA would have to cut out absolutely ALL discretionary spending to balance the budget--that's what dire straits they are in.

The state budget is around $100 billion and only about 40% ($40 billion--about the same amount as the shortfall) of that is discretionary. The other 60% is spending mandated by law, which can't be messed with without intervention by the Legislature (education, government employee pensions, social programs, etc.). Some of this is also federally mandated.

Unbelievable government expansion coupled with power shortages took CA from being well in the black 3 years ago, to a disastrous situation today.

Whatever budget cuts are passed (and they will be small, you can bet on that) will help in the long term, but not help a lot short term. CA will have to grow itself out of this deficit. The attempt to tax itself out of the deficit is fueling a revolt (which is a good thing) and driving businesses and productive citizens out of state.

Even if Davis is recalled and a Republican takes over (if this happens, I sure hope it's someone serious and not a celebrity like Schwarzenegger), the road ahead is fraught with disaster.

"In an unrelated story, Gov. Davis has lowered the requirements allowing state officicals and employees to take state vehicles home."

"In other news, California's State Government has become the largest purchaser of SUVs."

He has my vote.

Yep, although we in Minnesota have made a drastic political improvement with the election of Tim Pawlenty as Governor and Norm Coleman as Senator, we sure could use Tom McClintock's political saavy to help keep our spending woes at bay!

I used to live there, so I feel sorry for you folks. Whatever you do don't just let it go unpaid. I had a small trailer that I bought for a move. The yearly fee was about $25. After I used it I put it away and forgot to pay the next year. I hadn't given the DMV my change of address for it so I didn't receive a bill. About five years later a friend wanted to buy it but I had to get the registration current to be able to sell. With the unpaid fees and penalties the price to get it current was over $800. For a $200 trailer. Ended up bringing it with me to Colorado, cost $11 to get square here.

Knowing how the Spanish contingent of California drivers work under these circumstances, vehicles with outdated plates will be everywhere and outright sticker theft will be WAY up in the next few months.

If you're prepared to spend hundreds on that new sticker, put a metal frame around the plate too. This limits the ability of theives to snip off the lower corner of your plate, to 'harvest' your 04 sticker.

Well, you have to admit one thing, what they set out to do, they do well! Don't they?

With what happened to California, it almost had to have been done intentionally. Again as I state, time and time again on this forum, the Dem's motto is "Party before Country". They are doing a fine job in California to prove their point as to where their concerns "lie"!

The attempt to tax itself out of the deficit is fueling a revolt (which is a good thing) and driving businesses and productive citizens out of state.

A damn good thing.

We are basically dealing with lying, corrupt criminals, that have completely mismanaged the state, and the entire federal government for that matter. The laws that they demand we obey are only directed at tax paying citizens, while the government stands in silence, winking and nodding at millions of illegal aliens that are contributing to destruction of our system, our sovereignty and our economy!

The people of California voted in a *free* election to stop tax paid support of hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens that continue to invade our country, the federal government stepped in and burned our ballots and declared our free election, that we won, illegal!

The state in conspiracy with the federal government, supported the trashing of our election. The people of California spoke *loud and clear*, we won by a huge majority, only to be told that our votes meant nothing, as they bull dozed our voting booths and our entire election.

The illegals have driven down the wages in almost every sector of business, they have filled out jails, chocked off our social services and hospitals, killed our police officers and our citizens, jammed our already overcrowded classrooms, and have created general chaos that extend far beyond the California border.

This this scenario is now repeating itself and has spread to Tennessee, Utah, Illinois, Georgia, Ohio, Colorado, Florida, North and South Carolina, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, etc.

There needs to be a *NATIONAL REVOLT* against these corrupt criminal politicos, from the state levels to the national levels. They are dragging this nation into a toilet and a financial ditch, with their disregard for America and it's people. From our border security, to our immigration policies, to our trade policies, we are being choked off, and sold out. These politicos are *not* celebrities! Both of the two beltway parties are destroying this country, our economy, our standard of living, our borders and our sovereignty.

Get ready, this is but a microcosm of what will happen at a Federal level sometime in the next 10 years. Fortunately (or unfortunately) the Feds can borrow money forever, otherwise we would be there today. At some point though, it will just not be possible anymore. When that happens, the “automatic tax increase” will be invoked.

I am not sure a simple change in political leadership will solve the problem, although Gray-out has been a disaster. The problems go much deeper.

The Great Reckoning is upon us, it is time to watch your pennies. Where will this all lead to?
