State revamps driver's licenses in security move

ATLANTA - Georgia is revamping driver's licenses as part of a $20 million effort to reduce identity theft and keep illegal drivers off the road. It also should be easier to prevent alcohol sales to minors.

The new design will include security features, specialized graphics and tamper-resistant materials, which will make the licenses harder to forge.

It is expected to be available statewide by the end of September.

At that time, copies of birth certificates, rental agreements and other documents required to obtain a driver's license will be scanned into a new state database.

Wasn't Georgia the last state in the Union to require that drivers be licensed? I heard somewhere that until 1955, Georgians didn't need permission from the state to drive.

They just "revamped" the licenses a few years ago to accomplish these exact same goals (including encoded fingerprinting) at some sky-high price. What a racket. Wonder which vendor is getting the new business?

Very good point- recall those "Vehicle Safety Inspections" that we used to have, and which were so onerous?

Think the company that printed the stickers had to find another line of work when inspections were outlawed?

Think again- when I had the wrecker service, you had to apply every year for a Beacon Permit for the yellow beacon. Cash only, had to notarize the signature, etc. Guess what you got? A Georgia Inspection sticker, from the same company, but with "Beacon Permit" instead of "Safety Inspection" printed on it.

Legislation created the GHP with a Driver's license devision in 1937.

Freedom poster has a good point. Except in cases of FR being forbidden to post, articles are better in whole. If articles are excerpted they cannot be archived. Archiving comes in handy for the times the media is "accidentally on purpose" "revising"/removing "evidence." :)
